I Love The Rain

I think out of all of the different types of weather, rain is definitely in the top 3 if not number 1. I really do love powdery snow that looks almost like pillow stuffing as it floats down from the sky. That type of snow is also very light and easy to shovel compared to some of the super wet and heavy snow that makes you feel like you gained 15 pounds of muscle in your arms after just an hour of shoveling. All considered, I think I have decided that rain squeaks out as superior to all other types of weather. My reasonings include, for one, the coziness of the rain. Sitting inside, with a cup of hot something, watching movies and/or listening to music might just be one of the most peaceful experiences one can have. Additionally, if you do want to go outside, it is a very fun experience to frolic around in the rain and not care about how wet you get. If somebody has never had the opportunity to do so, I would highly recommend doing it at least once in your life. Another thing is raindrop racing. This is when two raindrops on a window race to be the first one to drop to the bottom of the window. I loved doing this as a kid, and betting on such events will always and forever be thrilling. My last point lies with the aftermath of the rain. Where I live, I am in a forest surrounded by pine trees, and the smell of pine trees freshly after it has rained is by far my favorite smell to ever exist ever. I can’t even describe it, it’s just so delicious. The one thing I will give rain haters is the fact that if you let your dog out in the rain, at least for my dog, it was a true hassle to dry him off after the fact, and the smell of wet dog is just something else entirely that doesn’t really need to be discussed. Overall, this is one of my opinions that I am very strong about for myself, but I am open to others having a differing opinion and possibly having a friendly discussion about it.

My Chapstick Obsession

Something that I am not sure a lot of people know about me is my chapstick obsession. I have an ungodly amount of chapsticks. My collection in my dorm is literally less than half of what I have at home. It all started in elementary school when my friends and I would give each other chapstick for our birthdays and Christmas. The tradition continued as I went all the way to 8th grade with these people, and every year we would still buy each other a new chapstick on special occasions. My friends and I were so psycho that we would coordinate which matching chapstick(s) we would bring to school that day in our pencil case and use. My traditions even carried into high school a bit, but I will admit I have died down on the obsession. That is mainly due, though, to the fact the one Burt’s Bees from Target is like 5 dollars. I’m sorry, but if I wanted to add a measly 3 to my collection, that would cost 15 dollars. I’m too poor to upkeep my obsession as much as I would like, but the legacy remains and I add when I can.

Movie Marathon

Recently, one of my favorite pastimes has been watching movies with my friends. These friends, in particular, are not big fans of horror – much to my dismay because I love horror so much – but we still have partaken in a large selection of genres. We have watched animated movies like Moana, Frozen, Wallee, and Up, and also some action movies along with fantasy. We are currently finishing up The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, and I just get so much nostalgia from watching these movies. I literally loved them so much when I was younger. Very recently, we watched Bridge to Terrabithia, and it was a very traumatic experience, to say the least. Spoiler alert, but the part where the girl died literally had me in such intense tears I was genuinely concerned for myself. I went to the bathroom after and looked in the mirror and my entire face was splotchy red and my eyes were so swollen hahaha. If you are an emotional person and are in the mood to watch something sad, this is definitely one of my top recommendations. As for the future, after we finish the third Narnia movie, we want to watch Lord of the Rings because I have never seen it before but my friends say it’s pretty good. We also want to rewatch the Hunger Games and maybe Harry Potter too. We have a very intense list that just keeps growing daily at this point, and we only seem to watch stuff on the weekends because we don’t have time during the week. I have faith in us though.

I’m So Tired

It’s literally only been like a week since we started school after the Holiday Break, and I am already so exhausted. A grand combination of horrible classes, ungodly homework, extracurriculars that take up too much time, and aggressive and long-lasting sports games have contributed to me feeling like I have zero time again and literally am hanging on by a thread. All I want to do is just sleep and lie down in my bed. But, the issue is that if I relax and do that, a massive part of my brain is telling me that I am not being productive enough and could be doing other things with my time that would be better for me. I am trying so hard to not be behind on work, and I did a decent job of that, but is the effort that it took to get there even worth it? I guess we will only know as soon as I get accepted into my dream college or something.

I genuinely don’t think I would be able to survive school without my planner. Like, I give the greatest props to the people who don’t use one. Every night, I will write down all my homework for every class and check stuff off as I go. It’s the only way I could fully be organized and not forget to do anything. I don’t understand the people who have a mental checklist and go from there, I don’t think I could ever do that successfully and not forget to do half of my homework. I also really enjoy highlighting in my journal. Colors make everything easier to read for me. If you look at all of my notes without knowing what each color represents, it definitely gets a little confusing. I feel bad for people who are colorblind. Just in general, I mean. Dumping ink onto all of my notes and planners and stuff is just so fun. If you don’t use a bunch of colors, that’s understandable. But if you don’t use a planner or something to write down your assignments, props.

My Future???

My mom and I have always dreamed of starting a bakery together. We both have big sweet tooths and are also both interested in business, so it seemed a very logical course of action for us. I actually think I want to go to college for business, so maybe this could actually be a plausible road for me in the future. Here is a basic rundown of how our bakery would be run and what types of things we would display.

First, we want the interior to be super cozy and welcoming from the moment you walk in. Paintings and colorful patterns would be everywhere, as would plants as well. There would be of course the counter and glass cases that would display our goodies, as well as an area for the cash register. We also would want this to be a place that people could come in and work at – a quiet area to relax and get work done while enjoying baked goods.

As for our menu, we want to have very staple items that are year-round and classic, such as cookie, brownie, and donut variations. We actually want our cookies to be kind of our specialty item and develop a super amazing recipe, although at the same time not neglecting our other sweets. However, we want our super special thing to be our holiday rotation. My mom and I literally spent an entire 12-mile hike talking about and going over all of the holiday-specific items we want to bring about. We talked about Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, and Halloween bakery and candy items, all of which are super creative and unique.

Lastly, for extra stuff, we want to have a selection of drinks to choose from, such as coffee, teas, and refreshers. We also want to include a small international candy station where we buy candy from all different continents to expose people to a small aspect of other cultures and hopefully encourage people to try new things.

That’s pretty much it, and it is all just a dream as of now, but who really knows?

Finals Rant

With finals approaching, I thought it was only fitting to write another rant discussing my thoughts on finals. First off, I don’t enjoy how much emphasis schools put on them. Finals are meant to be a test of how much knowledge you have acquired during the semester or school year. However, what if someone was able to learn a very good amount of stuff and is proficient in the skills taught in the class but is not necessarily a good test taker. Because many teachers stress the final so much, that student is probably going to be a worse test taker when it comes to something as big as a final. And, even if the student has a high grade in the class because they are proficient in the class and understand the concepts, since they are such a bad test taker, their grade could plummet to a number that doesn’t represent their true understanding of the class. This can be true especially because some teachers make the final such a significant portion of the grade overall.

If I were to provide a solution for this issue, I would recommend the teacher to provide different methods for students to prove their understanding of the course. They could do a traditional written test, or maybe a presentation of some sorts. The means of displaying comprehension could vary in general based on the class, but I feel this would be a more fair way to test the student’s knowledge without completely erasing the finals system, as I do think it is important to some degree. Another thing is making the final count for no more than 25% of the grade. Finals that range from 30% and up are solely testing the student on how good of a test taker they are. One of the more telling aspects of a grade, in my opinion, are class participation and homework grade. Both of these demonstrate not only enthusiasm and effort of a student, but also how dedicated they truly are the learning the material.

To conclude, I don’t believe the current education system is exactly fair, particularly when it comes to finals and their impact on a student’s grade. If teachers could provide more means of testing, as well as not have it count for the majority of the overall grade, many solid students would not have their grades falter due to unfair and unaccomodating methods.

Teacher Rant

Now, I’m not trying to get canceled nor reported, but I have very strong feelings about the way some teachers teach and I want to express them here. !!Disclaimer!! This is not directed toward any specific teacher or group of teachers affiliated with any particular school. Now that that’s out of the way, let me rant.

First off, one of the most annoying things on earth is when a teacher complains about the amount of work they have to grade and how difficult it is. I have a great suggestion for you! Maybe don’t assign so much work!! How do you think I felt doing it? Probably just as if not more bad than you feel now that you have to grade it. And don’t rebuttal with, “Oh, they have so many other students’ work to grade :(.” Sorry but not my problem maybe think about that when assigning such horrendous amount of work. Also, they act like I don’t have other classes’ work to do on top of the ungodly amount of horrific assignments I’m getting from their class.

Next, one thing I absolutely don’t understand at all is why teachers assign work over weekends and VACATIONS. IT’S CALLED A VACATION FOR A REASON. It’s not called, “Week Of School Where You’re Technically Not In School But Half Of Your Teachers Are Going To Assign Homework Like You Are.” Clearly it’s not called that, so what are we doing here? Also with weekends, like we for real just never get a break from doing work. ALSO, one thing that grinds my gears so so hard is when teachers give you – technically – a whole week and weekend to do something, but it’s an assignment that is entirely impossible to do during the week on top of the regular weekly spread for homework. So obviously I’m going to have to do it over the weekend, but if I complain, I just the same response of, “You had the whole week to do it.” LIKE SHUT UP I OBVIOUSLY DIDN’T.

Anyway, I guess I can end this off by ranting about teachers who don’t know how to teach. Again, not targeted toward any individual in particular, but sitting at your desk making us all watch a video of some random guy on Youtube explain the lesson is not teaching. In order to properly teach, you actually have to teach. It’s a mindblowing concept, I’m aware, but I’m sure you got it. And then, it’s the same teachers that don’t do anything the whole class and just sit there watching us get more and more confused by some random video that have the audacity to assign like 40 pages of reading or like 50 problems or something, all due the next day.

I know this was very aggressive, but I felt the need to really speak my mind in general, especially considering my last blog was so positive. As I’ve said before, thank you for listening to my Ted Talk and have a nice day.

Best Feelings

Because I always tend to write negative blogs, I figured that this week I’d try to write about something positive. So, here is my list of the best feelings in the world.

Making someone genuinely laugh, being so happy you can’t even explain it, sneezing, listening to music in the car and lip-syncing along, seeing the waiter bring your food out, looking out the window in the morning to fresh snow, laughing so hard you can’t breathe, sitting down after spending hours cleaning, when ALL your knuckles crack with relatively no pain, relaxing after being extremely productive, late night drives (bonus points if with music), taking a shower after practice, sleeping in after you deserve it, receiving unexpected gifts, climbing into clean sheets with freshly shaved legs, having really deep/ long conversations, taking your heels off, getting a good grade on an assignment you thought you did bad on, Christmas morning, holding hands with someone special, singing in the shower, cozying up when it’s cold outside, when you like your fit and you get compliments, waking up and realizing you still have a couple hours to sleep, getting told that you’re missed, screaming songs in the car with your friends, when your cats want to cuddle, being proud of something you cooked/baked, taking a photo with someone you love, when your food is hitting the exact right spots, eating ice cream while on a walk, when your notes for school look really good an aesthetic, getting lost in a book, those head scratcher things, and super duper long hugs.

I never necessarily understood the term “opposites attract.” Like, what does that even mean? If two things have completely opposing characteristics, how on earth could they ever work together? Well, I’m confident in saying that I now understand the contradictory concept.

My roommate and I are literally the most opposite people on the planet. She is a night person, whereas I am a morning person (on the weekends, I usually wake up about four hours earlier than her). Her side of the room is messy a lot of the time, whereas I physically can’t function or think if mine is anything but perfect. She prefers to look at things logically, whereas I am an extremely emotional person. While we both get good grades, she is naturally very very smart so the effort she puts into school is about five times less than what I put in. She is quite the introvert, while I tend to be more extroverted. All considered, I think you get the point, that my roommate and I could not be more of different people. However, I don’t think I would trade her for anyone else in the world.

I think the term “opposites attract” stems from the conclusion that those with conflicting principles complement each other and help each other experience new perspectives. Analyzing your differences can also lead to making common connections of random similarities that weren’t originally apparent. For example, my roommate and I both share similar hobbies like playing both volleyball and piano. We also are both only children, and share a lot of the same food tastes. We also both sleep talk, except she does in Chinese, so she has an unfair advantage over me with that one. Anyway, coming to boarding school has made me realize the importance of finding people that can provide you with new outlooks on all aspects of life, as it will never be beneficial to stick only to what you know. My roommate and I have been rooming together for about two and a half years now, in our third school year, and we don’t plan on parting ways anytime soon. Well, that is if I can keep it together and not drop my metal water bottle onto the ground producing an ear-piercing crash at seven in the morning when she is trying to sleep in.
