From Guns to Cyberspace

It started with Edward Smith in 1831 and now it has come to the internet. Hundreds of New York residents are victimized by a cyber robbery virus known as Zeus Trojan.

The headline reads: Dozens Charged In Schemes to Steal from Bank Accounts Using Computer Viruses. Who would have thought that the futuristic phenomenon known as “the World Wide Web” would eventually become our biggest threat to our safety? What do we do now that any stranger can have access to our most valuable personal information? Internet withholds information about us that we think is kept secret, but in reality the whole world can see it….and use it.

The scariest part is that all of these criminals are overseas. This “hackers community” started across the water in Eastern Europe and worked its way over to the Eastern shores of America and hopefully won’t get the chance to spread around the world. Let’s hope that it hasn’t happened yet. I’m positive that I’m gonna make darn sure my info is safe on the internet because if it’s not safe there then it’s not safe anywhere.

The Other Invisible Children

About two seconds ago I was browsing the WordPress home page. On the page are a number of links to other peoples’ blog posts. The links are joined by pictures relating to the posts. One picture in perticular popped out at me. The picture was a young male looking into the camera. The title underneath his picture was “Another Suicide. Not Just a Number.”

Take a moment to think. Are you gay? Are you a lesbian? Are you thinking about suicide? I sincerely hope that isn’t on your mind. How about this question, are you afraid to share your sexual orientation with the world? How many of you are afraid of judgment or stereotyping or even abuse? I know there are a lot of questions, but I only ask them because the post that I read is about a 19 year old college student named Raymond Chase committed suicide on Wednesday. No one will ever know why he took his own life but the post’s opening sentence says, “On Wednesday night, openly-gay 19 year old Raymond Chase took his own life by hanging himself in his door room.” What question does that spark in your head?

Hotel California, Eat Your Heart Out!

In the 30’s the future was a corrupted government cowering under the watchful eye of “Big Brother.” In the 60’s the future was flying space craft automobiles and a boy named Elroy. At the turn of the century everyone expected to have mastered the art of teleportation. Today in 2010 the people of the world will expect to have created the most futuristic and masterful space creation possible: a Space Hotel!

‘Planet Michael’

Get ready M.J. fans! Just when you thought a fun kid’s play land – complete with petting zoo and carnival games – and leaving a legacy as the King of Pop music was enough, out comes….A VIDEO GAME! Michael Jackson has left an impression on the music lovers of the world that will last for as long as the earth itself will rotate. At first, in the eyes of his fans, he was running a close second to Jesus in the Relay of Life (*winky face*). At times his popularity started to leave a bitter taste in our mouths. After his death he has risen back to the top and all of the judgement seems to wash away. And wouldn’t you know it, his celebrity keeps growing with the help of his newest virtual publicity booster. He “Thrilled” us with his music and shocked us with his “change of color”. Now, as his legacy continues, Michael Jackson leaves yet another mark on history: Planet Michael.

Casualties of War

2010 declared “the deadliest year for NATO forces since the war began.” Nine soldiers were announced dead as a military helicopter crashes in southern Afghan region and as witnesses say there was no visible attack on the helicopter itself by opposing soldiers the notorious Taliban were quick to take credit.

No Longer Invisible

Hey everyone! What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you this week? Did any of you get dumped by your partner you’ve had since 9th grade? Did any of you get pulled over for speeding? Did any of you get into a fight with your mom or dad? Imagine your high school sweetheart being taken away and forced to fight a war they didn’t deserve to fight. Imagine speeding away in a car or running away from an angry mob of men chasing after you while bullets are rushing by. Now imagine your mother of father being murdered right in front of you. Imagine fighting for your life with almost no chance of surviving. Believe it or not, while I type this message, someone is doing exactly that. Fighting. They are fighting for survival and they are fighting for freedom.

Just a few decades ago in Uganda, Africa a rebellion began. That rebellion led to a war. That war is still happening today and now it is involving the young children of Africa. In 2003, three men decided that this war must end and they started with a documentary on the lives of war-stricken victims. Now, almost 8 years later they are traveling all over North America to get people involved in making a difference for Africa. Volunteers from the organization as well as an actual refugee from Northern Uganda came to my school tonight and told us their story. I was inspired and I want to share my inspiration. So, I’m sending this email to everyone in my contact list, hoping that it will be read and passed on to others. Please visit the website and see just how much suffering these people have to endure. The reality of it all will shock you.
