The Summer I Worked All The Time

This past summer, I turned in my resume to over 10 businesses. I only got one call back. I knew that getting a job would be hard, but I never thought that it would be nearly impossible. When I got the call from the manager at Skating Plus that he wanted to interview me, I was over the moon. After my interview, I was sure that I would get the job. I already had 4 friends working at Skating Plus, so they could put in a good word for me. The day I got the call, I was in Ralph’s shopping for pickles. The moment I heard “we would like to hire you”, I jumped up and down, holding my jar of pickles. Still on the phone with the manager who had just hired me, I walked around the store continuing our conversation. The second the phone hung up, I called my best friend and roommate, Chelsea, who worked at Skating Plus, and told her I got the job. A week later, Chelsea was the one training me for my very first shift. I picked things up quickly and soon became friends with my new coworkers. I made over $3,000 that summer from working. I would work mornings, nights, and doubles. My first paycheck, I went on a shopping spree, because I had earned it. I am still working at Skating Plus, trying to balance running cross country, going to school, doing homework, and spending time with my family and friends.

I have a job at a local bar, or pub, I guess. It’s got a bar but also has places to sit. Anyway, I’m a busser and the Host, which is kinda cool. I get $15 an hour plus tips every night, and I usually get like 10-20 bucks from each server and sometimes the bartender, so I end up going home with like 30ish dollars every night I work, which is two to three times a weekend. In addition to the 8-12 hours, give or take, I get another 60-90 dollars per weekend. It’s pretty good money, it pays for gas and car insurance and stuff. After a while, I’ll have a solid amount of money and that might help me when I go to college and stuff.

But, there are definitely downsides to working every weekend. For one, I don’t hang out with friends very often and I don’t really have a lot of time in general. I end up missing a lot of school events and things, and sometimes that kinda sucks you know? Sometimes it feels like I’m losing friends because I work so much, and It’s not exactly necessary for me to work, but I want to have a car and I need to work to have a car so here we are. Anyway, I’m gonna quit at the beginning of next summer so I can have one more summer where I do whatever I want so I guess I’ll just look forward to that.

Summer… School?

When thinking about the summer, I was always overly excited to graduate, go back home, and spend time with friends and family.

But, recently, those plans have change. I am still graduating, of course, but I am not going back home. Instead, I am staying right here in Ojai and working for OVS‘ summer camp program!

I knew I would need to get a summer job this summer. So, I started looking for many places back by where I live, but not many of them wanted to hire someone just for a few months during summer. My friend had told me that she was planning on staying in Ojai and working for OVS this summer. I figured it would be a really good opportunity and I would also be making a good amount of money.

I am pretty excited about this opportunity! First of all, I love kids and I am excited to work with the younger kids this summer and do fun activities with them.

Secondly, I am happy that I will be around a lot of my friends, since most of them are day students and live around this area anyways.

After I work, I will be able to go home in early August and spend a month at home with no obligations. I can see my friends and family and then, after that, it’s off to college at Cal Lutheran! I am so excited for this summer and for what’s to come after it as well! 🙂
