The wombats
We all need some good songs to sing and dance along to, on occasion, and The Wombats provide just this.

Formed in Liverpool, England in 2003 the Indie Pop band provides music that is quirky and brilliant. With lyrics that are strong and fun the band really can do no wrong. Each song is easy to relate to as they use everyday things to describe their feelings and emotions.

With lyrics such as, “Carrots help us see much better in the dark. Don’t talk to girls; they’ll break your heart,” there is no way a band like this can go wrong.

Releasing the first album “The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation,” globally in 2007 the album was a great success coming 11th in the UK album charts. The album was full of great songs that individually did very well in the charts.

In 2010 the band were back releasing new singles such as “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves).” Then in 2011 the group followed on with the album “The Wombats Proudly Present…This Modern Glitch.” The new album has a more grown up sounds in comparison to the first album, involving different sounds. In no way does this make it worse, in fact many argue that it was better coming 3rd in the UK album chart.

So if you feel like you have energy to burn and want to listen to some fun, individual music you should definitely listen to The Wombats.

The number 19 is not considered special by most people. It doesn’t get the glory of 10 or hold the importance of 100. But on Saturday, May 14th of 2011, the number 19 got a little credit.

Manchester United won their 19th league title this past Saturday. To most people, that does not seem to be a good enough reason to shave the number in to your chest hair, but for Manchester United star striker Wayne Rooney (pictured above) it was a great reason.

This league title now gives Manchester United the most league titles of any English club. Again this may not seem like a huge deal. But looking back it is a huge deal.

Before the 1992-93 season, United only had 7 league titles. This was not bad but compared to Liverpool’s 18 titles, it was quite small. But in only 19 seasons, United won 12 of their now 19. That is simply incredible.

With this new title United can now surpass their arch nemesis Liverpool as far as the most dominant team in history. All of the last 12 titles have come from Sir Alex Ferguson who took over a struggling team.

United had not won a title since the 1966-67 season. During that time they had been relegated and had lost much of their prestige. But Fergie changed all of that. During his reign, United have won many accolades including the Treble, the only team to have ever accomplished the feat.

Fergie should be credited with much of the rebuilding that has happened. He took over in 1988, taking over a club that was on the verge of relegation. He has now built them in to the largest team in the world.

United now hold 19 league titles, a number that for them seemed impossible to get to. They were weak and now they are strong. Now they can be the ones celebrating by carving numbers in to their chest hair.

Two Cups Left

Although I have been in deep denial over the subject of Manchester United getting knocked out of the FA Cup, I feel that I must now acknowledge it.

Over the last weekend, United came to a pathetic halt to Manchester City. Yes, we lost to the men in powder blue.

It was an embarrassing display by United, but I really cannot blame them. I am not trying to make excuses but they have played so many games this season (losing VERY few of them) that by this point they are bound to slip up.

As I had said in previous writing, I did not expect them to win the treble (though I was very much hoping for it). United still have to beat Schalke in the tie for the Chapions League and hold off Arsenal for the League title.

After the very interesting and to be honest, weird draw between Arsenal and Liverpool, United’s shot at their 19th League title looks good. They cannot become to complacent but as long as they keep cool heads they should win it.

The Champions League games are a totally different story. I admit that I do not know much about Schalke except that they are playing fantastic right now and they have a great goalkeeper in Neuer. Even if United can beat them, I worry that United does not have what it takes to beat either Barca or Real Madrid.

However, Fergie and the boys always have a few tricks up their sleeves, especially when it comes to the Champions League. Manchester United’s season is getting very interesting now.

Disgraceful United Fans

The game between Manchester United and Liverpool’s youth teams was an ugly one. The game saw 4 red cards as well as riots and fights in the stands. It was a Manchester United home game.

The trouble in the stands started when United fans started singing songs about the Heysel and Hillsborough tragedies of the 1980’s, a subject that is close to all Liverpool fans hearts.

Although I love a good rivalry, this is going to far. In these tragedies, 135 people died including players. These songs were insulting to the families that have lived through it.

Unfortunately there is not an easy or effective way to prevent people from singing abusive songs inside the grounds in my mind.

Former Liverpool player John Aldridge was at the game, and was also present during the Hillsborough tragedy, called the actions of the United fans “disgraceful”.

Although the United fans actions were not acceptable by any means, I can be more than sure that Liverpool fans were less than friendly. There were many reports after the game of ugly clashes between the fans.

As I said I love a healthy rivalry. I would go as far to say that I love bad blood where teams hate each other because they play so hard for the win. But it is not ok for any fan or player to publicly insult the people who lost their lives and the families that have had to live through it.

I am upset that United fans would stoop down to that level especially because they went on to win the game 3-2.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool

On Sunday, March 6th, Manchester United faces Liverpool. This might sounds clichéd but this is the most important game of the season. That was said about the Chelsea game and it might prove to be true but I am hoping United can move on.

After the heart breaking loss to Chelsea last weekend, this is a key game. If United win, they have a chance to guarantee that they are 3 points clear of Arsenal. But Liverpool do worry me. They might have lost Torres but they gained Suarez who is a real danger.

There are 10 games left in the Premier League season and every week the pressure will rise. I still believe that it is a two horse race between Arsenal and United.

Shock Move

It has just come out that Fernando Torres has signed with Chelsea. This is a shocking move, one that was once considered a silly rumor.

What is being said right now is that Torres has been sold to Chelsea for about £45 million or about $72 million.

The Spanish international Torres has scored 65 goals in 102 EPL games, a very good record. However, Torres form in recent matches has not been like the Torres of old. I do not think he has looked very good since last season.

I was able to watch Torres play at the World Cup this last summer and I know he has talent. But he will be playing up top with Drogba, another great striker. I question whether the styles of Drogba and Torres will fit together for they are very different.

Drogba is a power players, crashing through defenses and blasting shots. Torres on the other hand has speed and agility, combined with a deadly accurate foot. If these two players can work together, Chelsea will be an incredibly deadly team. But if not, one of the strikers will leave, possibly ruining Chelsea.

Liverpool are getting a good deal here. Torres wanted out for quite a while and they are getting a very good price for a players that has not been playing up to his potential. Liverpool just added Suarez who is an attacking force, making up for the loss of Torres’ goal scoring capability.

This is a very interesting deal and the football world will be watching very closely at Fernando Torres’ performance the rest of the season. He now must put out £45 million performances every game.

Football Wednesday

A Wednesday full of football makes it a great day for a blog. Today we saw games with results that were not very surprising. Manchester united tied Manchester City, a result neither side was happy with.

As a Manchester United fan, I felt very upset. Not only is Man City our derby rivals, but this tie means that we are now 4 points back of Chelsea after their win over Fulham. We were the better team on the day but we looked as dangerous as a flower in front of the goal. Hopefully Rooney will recover quickly and come back with his vicious striking ability intact.

Arsenal grabbed a 2-0 win over Wolves thanks to a brace scored by their rising hero Chamakh. Chelsea’s win over Fulham keeps them in that top spot, one that they don’t seem like they are ever going to give up.

West Brom 3-2 Arsenal goal

With how the results ended up today, there was not any movement in the table whatsoever. So in the end no big surprises, and I can say that even though Liverpool drew Wigan, that makes my day.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Today I am faced with a dilemma. The question has popped up, if a player does not see his future at a club as being positive should he leave? If I was playing at a club, and the future was not filled with big and shiny trophys, I would leave, if I could. But what if that club raised me, got me where I was, and always has the potential of winning? Wayne Rooney has made up his mind, he wants out of Manchester United. Although I cannot say I am happy with his choice, I can not say that I would not do the same thing.

Lost Liverpool

The soccer headlines have been dominated by the news that Liverpool and their owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks are at war. The American owners are in about £237 of debt which in about 376 million dollars. That means that Liverpool cannot buy players and because of that they are suffering.

They are in the relegation zone (or for you non soccer fans, the bottom three teams that get knocked down to the lower division at the end of the year). This has caused a major rift between the fans, coach, players and the owners. The American boys want to sell the club but they have to act quickly because the Royal Bank of Scotland, which holds the debts, will seize the club if the debts are not paid off by October 15th.
