The first time for everything

This week we played our first game, we lost.  Now that that’s out of the way I can talk about all the good things that happened.

Firstly we showed up at Viewpoint School and were directed where to park by PARKING ATTENDANTS.  We finally get to the field to be greeted by 30 lacrosse players and a beautiful turf field.  For the 12 OVS spuds it was quite intimidating.

One person said to me as we were walking up, “oh wow they have enough players to sub every five seconds!!!”

Yet we went out there and played, and for more than half our team it was the very first lacrosse game they have ever played in.  Talk about shell shock, your either going at 110% or standing still.  It is incredibly fast paced and very intimidating to people who have never played before.

Sometimes I think we should be the stubborn spuds and not just the spuds.  Down by almost ten in the first half, we had nothing to lose.  Exhausted and on edge we squared our shoulders and started the second half zero to zero in our heads.  By the end of the third quarter we were up 3-0.

Although we lost we came together as a team learned a lot, and definitely left them some bruises to think about.

Trying Something New

Stepping out of my comfort zone is not an easy thing for me to do.
Generally, I don’t like to try new things, especially if I have to commit to them for a long time.

To be honest, I’m afraid of being bad at things that I try.

But this year, I promised myself that I would take new and appealing opportunities that came my way.

So, on a whim, I decided to join the soccer team.

It’s funny when I think about it, it really is. I am sort of clumsy, and I am the slowest runner you will ever meet. I also have no stamina what so ever. I knew I would end up making a fool of myself, but then I decided I didn’t care one bit if I did or not. I mean, how bad could I be?

The answer is, not too bad actually. Although I am very slow and have never played a day in my life before, it turns out I don’t suck as much as I thought I would. I was the manager/helper in past years of soccer, so I already know most of the rules and how the games work.

I know it’s not going to be easy by any means, but I’m so excited for this season. And honestly, I just wish I had joined sooner. Our first game is the week we get back from Thanksgiving break, and I can’t wait!

GO SPUDS! 🙂

OVS Football

Today, Saturday the 24th, was the first OVS football game.  Twenty plus guys and one girl went out and fought valiantly against East Valley.

It was quite a game, and more than a few times I found myself yelling and jumping up and down as OVS players ran the ball up and down the field.

It was quite a good turnout as well, with many OVS Upper students coming down as well as many Lower School students and faculty.  I came to the game with my dad and we brought our lunches, and had a nice afternoon watching testosterone brimming boys pummel each other.

In the end, though, the mighty Spuds were defeated.  There defeat was in no part a lack of heart or effort on the OVS team.  The sweat was visibly dripping down their faces and soaking their clothes yet they never relented.  The “OVS Champions” came out the second half and really stepped it up.  A real scramble at every play OVS made East valley work for every inch or ground gained.

As OVS is a very young  team, this was the first game for many player.  Even with the clear ‘green’ of the team, they did not lack heart what-so-ever.  Many of East Valley’s touchdowns were scored merely off of errors on OVS’ part that, with the continued diligence of coaching staff, will soon be corrected, and OVS football will be a force to be reckoned with.
