Common Wealth Games Theme Song

For the opening ceremony of the long-awaited Common Wealth games being hosted in New Delhi this year, the theme song was sung by the world famous Grammy winner and composer of Slumdog Millionaire‘s, “Jai Ho,” A. R Rahman.

However, this song did not do justice to the high expectations people had in mind who were expecting a song much like Shakira‘s, ” Waka Waka.”

Rahman who reportedly received Rupees 5 Crores (2.5 million dollars) for the song, worked on the song for 6 months before publically singing in during the opening ceremony of the Common Wealth. Despite this, the song received criticism from the audience and was a big disappointment for the people who were expecting something more inspirational.

The song was a matter of national pride for India, which is hosting a sporting event for the first time. Ministers from the Parliament were also involved with the making of the song, as they received regular reports on it from Rahman before the release. However now they claim to have no authority over the matter.

“We as ministers do not sit on judgment on the work by acknowledged persons. Rahman was requested and he has done his work. Going by authority we approved the work,” said Urban Developement Minister S. Jaipal Reddy.

However, there is much talk about a new theme song for the Common Wealth. The people expect a lot more from this version. The video will also have some big names stars in it. The sports Secretary of India confirms that, “There will be more music, particularly instrumental, in the opening theme song of the Games”.
