Oh Say Can You Sing?

You might find this post a massive waste of time, but as a musician I think this story will and should have an enormous impact on the world of music…well, maybe not that big, but perhaps a tickle.

GET THIS!

wow!

Musical goddess, role model and icon, Christina Aguilera – who once acted as a leader in a self-conscious, self-doubting community – made a major boo-boo at this year’s Super Bowl.

X-Tina fans all over the world were on the edge of their seats waiting with anxiety to hear the first note of our country’s theme song flow from Christina’s mouth.

Emotions were on the rise as the announcer introduced the singer to the stadium.

“Ladies and gentlemen, 5 time Grammy award winner, Christina Aguilera!”

Mic raised, she slowly opened her ruby red painted lips and when she sang the first word the butterflies from our stomachs fluttered. She was on fire. Singing with her soulful, trademark melisma – or more commonly known as vocal gymnastics – spirits were being lifted.

But, then just as quickly, hearts dropped at the unexpected incident. Towards the middle of the song where there was meant to be a build up to the big finish there was instead a big fail. Poor Christina Aguilera, who according to TMZ, had “nailed” the performance during her rehearsals had screwed up the words to the national anthem.

It could have been worse, really. There have been more noticeable and more embarrassing mess-ups on the anthem, like Caroline Marcil who screwed up, screwed up again and then after a third attempt, embarrassed herself even further by slipping and falling on her back. The best part is, she’s not even American. So, like I said, it could have been worse. But, even the greatest artists who seem to be flawless have to screw up sooner or later.

To add to Christina’a public humiliation Television directors/camera men (MR. ALVAREZ WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY CALLED?) decided, for dramatic effect, to broadcast a five second shot of the U.S. military soldiers, who were watching from their station, right after she made her mistake. Although they were generous enough to not react immediately and on camera, you could see the disappointment on their faces.

America

But, even though she messed up on the Star Spangled Banner – which is a big, fat, whopping, no-no by the way – there is a silver lining. You see, Christina is such a talented and experienced musician that she was able to catch herself and continue the song with no problem. At the end of the song she even had the football players in tears. Who knows if they were tears of joy or of disappointment, but either way, they were crying.
