Primus – The Band of Weird

Primus sucks. Now, that’s an odd way to start a blog related to American rock band Primus, but I swear, it has a story.

Over the summer, I saw Primus with my aunt and uncle, and honestly, it was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Every time I see a concert, I say that, but this time I mean it. It was.. an odd experience, having to get off of a boat after being out on the water weeks beforehand, landing in Los Angeles, getting picked up by my aunt and uncle in Long Beach, eating barbeque, seeing Flying Frog Brigade, Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Primus, and going back to the hotel for 6 hours of sleep before getting back on the boat again for a week.

Needless to say, I felt as if my third eye opened seeing this band. The visuals were great, the pit was amazing during Primus’s set, and the entire bands stage presence is otherworldly, even with Les Claypool’s opening bands. I’ve liked this band before seeing them, while seeing them, and after seeing them.. and I still love them.

Primus rejects mainstream musical paths, has the bassist as their lead singer along with crazy bass lines, amazing drum and guitar solos, and stories about characters rather than personal experiences and commentary on the world.

I love this band. They’re weird, and I personally find comfort in the absurdist band such as this.

Auditions

This upcoming Sunday is my audition for OYES (Ojai Youth Entertainers Studio). I’m honestly somewhat terrified. This is the first play I’ve done that isn’t apart of school, so there’s no guarantee that I’d get in for sure. I feel like that’s the most nerve racking part of it all, honestly.

The musical that OYES is doing is Ride the Cyclone, which has been one of my favorite musicals for the longest time, ever since I found out about it in the 7th grade. It’s about a group of choir kids who die on a rollercoaster accident, and each one of them has to tell their story, in song form, in order to be set back to life by a fortune teller.

I have to memorize a one-minute monologue and sing a cut of a song. I’ve been paranoid about memorizing the monologue for the past week, mainly because it also applies to my theatre class on Friday, in which I have to preform. Might as well do the same monologue for both events, no need to memorize two different ones, right?

Still, I’ve been terrified. What if I miss a line, or have a voice crack in the middle of the song? It’s better not to dwell on it for now, only when I’m driving to the studio is when I get to sweat bullets about it. It’s whatever, if I don’t get in, there’s no big deal. Hopefully.

New School Year

Around 2 weeks ago, counting camping, school had started. The first week of school was easy, I mean, it always is leading up to prep for all school camping and eventually going out to camp. Camping itself was fun, along with the weekend following it, me and my brother went to go see LA Galaxy versus the Seattle Sounders. I’m not the biggest on soccer, but it was fun for my 9 year-old brother, so that’s all that matters.

I’d say, not a lot besides that weekend had started off this school year. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have things in the future I’m looking forward to, such as My Chemical Romance with my friend, going to see more local shows, a trip to Patagonia and a trip to Greece.. and I’m sure a lot of other things that I can’t think of right now. Nonetheless.. I have a feeling that this year’s gonna be a pretty solid year.

A Whole Lotta.. Nothing

Just last week, it was Spring break, and as the title shows, you can infer that I did a whole lot of doing nothing.

Sure, I went with my family to La Paz in Baja Sur, Mexico, and stayed on my boat that was there. It was… kind of fun, but I’m not too fond of boats. Whenever we were out fishing, I caught a triggerfish that was bigger than my whole head, which, yeah, it was fun, but waiting there for a fish to bite ate me alive. My dad and my younger brother William caught the biggest fish of all, a grouper, that was bigger than my 8-year-old brother!

We stayed out on the island for a few nights and ate a lot of sashimi from the fish we caught, and I tried scallops for the first time. I’ve always been a very adventurous person when it comes to food, but that was terrible. I did not like it.

On the island, my family paddleboarded, played cards, and my brother and I went tubing. That was the most fun part of the trip.

But whenever we weren’t doing anything, we didn’t do anything. I slept the majority of the trip, which caused me to stay up late and sleep in late, so there was a bunch of sleeping. And a lot of progress on my brother’s and my game, we like to play, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I help him a lot with it.

All in all, it was a very fun trip. 😛

Baseball

I had recently joined the baseball team at the beginning of the sports season. I haven’t done a team sport since I was like… 7 or 8, and I’m just getting into sports now. I don’t know what drove me to join baseball, but, at the same time, I would think it would be fun anyway.

After losing a game 3-13 (ouch.) I wanted to get better. Sure, I haven’t had any sports experience prior, but… It’s the effort that counts. As soon as I got home, my dad and I played catch.

It was nice playing catch with him because I like playing baseball, and he’s a good person to play catch with.

We had a game today, and we won 4-3! My parents were so happy to find out that we won, even though I was benched the whole time. I strive to get better, though, no matter what. Even if I won’t be put out in play.

Quentin Tarentino’s Underrated Gem – Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino is known for a plethora of films, most famously Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs. But that’s not to say those are his only good films.

Over break, I was yearning for a movie. A Tarentino movie, to be exact. That’s when I look at my ‘To Watch’ list in my notes app, and I see the movie Death Proof.

I look up what the movie is about. “A stuntman who kills women with a modified car labeled as ‘Death Proof'”. That… doesn’t seem interesting. Well, not to me at least, since I’m not into cars that much.

Well, to my surprise, I really liked this movie. The music, the visuals, the makeup, the comedy, and the actors. Despite being considered a “flop” to Tarentino, this movie is held very close to my heart.

I recommend it to people who are into cars. I didn’t understand half the things that the actors were talking about when they were talking about cars. Whoops.

Stressful Two Weeks

Imagine this.. you’re having a wonderful day. The flowers are swaying in the light gusts of wind, the sun is shining, and there’s no cloud in the sky, and it seems like a good day! That’s until this guy comes up, a very nice-looking man, and proceeds to take a wood plank out and hit you on the head a few times, Looney Tunes style.

Well, not actually. Yet, it seems like the guy was nice, but he ended up hurting you. That guy resembles the two weeks before break. Sure, you were a bit uneasy about this guy walking up to you, but you didn’t know he was gonna hit you several times.

There is one week left before the break. Last week? Last week sucked until the weekend. Along with this week, or what the future holds. 2 tests in your hardest classes on Thursday, and 3 easy on Friday.

I’d call that a double whammy, but considering last week had a lot of tests, too… jeez, it’s only gonna get better till break.

Still, these few days might be the longest of my life. It’s okay, my bed awaits me each time I get home. And all next week.

Drivers ED… Yeesh

Just yesterday, I decided to start drivers ED. The reason why is that every day after school, instead of waiting for the bus to come at 5:20 after school to get home at 6:00 (🫩), my friend Zooey would drop me off at the lower campus. Feeling bad, I brought it up with my parents to start drivers ED.

Of course, I have to jump through hoops just to convince them. “You can only stay in the Ojai area and Oak View!” No Ventura..? Where everything is?

Sparing arguing, I sucked it up and listened to what my boundaries are and how I can’t drive Creek Road (That’s.. one of the roads you need to go on to get to my house..), and my dad let me buy Coastline Drivers ED.

Well, better learn to drive now before I go off to college (hopefully out of state) because who’s gonna entertain my brother during breaks when I come back? He won’t be of driving age. It’s okay, I’ll drive him to the places that my parents won’t drive to.

New Interests

Throughout the past week, well, technically through break, I found myself looking into more things I haven’t picked up for the past two to three years. One of these is Fallout, with the second season just dropping in December, releasing episodes every Wednesday.

Whenever the first season came out, in 2024, I had heard about the franchise through my old friend. Victor. He grew up on the games, and he’s been begging me to play Fallout New Vegas. I downloaded it on my Xbox, and I played for a bit, till I encountered a roadblock in the gameplay, my younger self getting frustrated.

I let go of the game for a while, focusing on more school and other personal endeavors, such as writing and drawing. That was until I watched the second season with my dad, my interest sparking again.

Discouraged with FNV, I decided to download Fallout 4, one of the more recent games, on my computer. Slowly chipping away at the game, I play it every night, and I yearn to finish it.

The show? Good. I like it. I recommend it to anyone who likes postapocalyptic stories and well-written characters.

Overambitious

I consider myself a tad bit overambitious, and I don’t even know why. I feel like it’s my need to live up to my parents’ expectations of me (hell, even surpass them), and also to give my younger brother a good example to look up to, because I never had that, since I am the eldest sibling. I just wanna seem impressive for my age, y’know?

I’ve been working on several novels since the 6th grade, adding random characters, plots, and just a bunch of random stuff to them, but never actually having the time to write at all. I want to get at least one of those drafts actually published to the public, but by the time I actually have free time, I’m exhausted, and I don’t wanna do anything and sleep/doom scroll.

Though this urge to write more, draw more, or even just play music more has to come from somewhere. I don’t think I will ever know. Definitely not soon.
