App Review: 9 Colonies

fe

Hello. As anyone who goes to OVS knows gaming has been banned in the dorms. There is a grayish area however (More of a ignorable area). iPhone Apps, more specifically iPhone Games can be amazing.

A great strategic game for iOS is 9 Colonies. 9 Colonies is a simple real time strategy game developed by XOR Gaming.

It is the year 2180 and humanity has expanded to all nine planets in the solar system.  Each of the nine planets vies for control of the solar system and the rest of humanity. Your job is simple, join a planet, conquer other planets, and unite the solar system.

9 Colonies has an interesting mechanic to keep track of players progress. Although the date of 9 Colonies begins on 2180time moves forward via an in game weekly calendar.

For example if a player wanted to research a STARBASE, a planet defense upgrade, that research might take the player five weeks. Or if a player needed to invade another planet it might take them ten weeks to travel there. XOR Gaming put in place this clever mechanic to make the player understand there is a price to every ship they build, every structure they construct, and every technology they research.

The more advanced your colony and technology is the more likely you will be able to defeat your enemies. However as you upgrade your arsenal and planet’s defenses your enemy does the same. To make the game more difficult XOR Gaming implemented three critical attributes that the player must manage.

Injustice what is it

why does it happen?

If it a tree drops its leaves,

whom do you blame?

If a spider makes a web,

whom do you blame?

If a fish breathes water,

whom do you blame?

If a bird flies,

whom do you blame?

If a snake shakes its tail,

If the ground shakes

If a writer writes,

If a poet writes poetry,

how could you blame?

Bonfire Night, what is it?

er

Today is a day that most American’s don’t even know exist or acknowledge. Today is Bonfire Night. This event was brought to my attention by Mrs. Beverly (an OVS art teacher). Being as curious as I am, I decided to look up some information to learn more about Bonfire Night. Here’s what I found.

Bonfire Night commemorates the survival of King James I after a group of conspirators attempted to assassinate him and to blow up Parliament. The assassination plot is known as the Gunpowder Plot because the conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament with barrels of Gunpowder. The explosive expert of the conspirators was a man named Guy Fawkes, it was his job to smuggle the gunpowder in the House of Lords and ignite it. Unfortunately for Guy Fawkes (and the rest of the conspirators) he was caught before he could ignite the gunpowder.

Upon being captured Guy Fawkes was taken to the Tower of London where he was tortured and forced to give up the names of his fellow conspirators.

Fawkes, along with the rest of the conspirators, were publicly executed.

On the night the Gun Powder Plot was foiled, the 5th of November 1605, the English lit bonfires to celebrate the survival of their king. Thus Bonfire Night was born.

Flower

r4t

A flower cannot grow alone.

It must find soil to have a home.

It starts as a seed, it probably won’t survive.

The odds are great the seed will die.

It’s a small chance but the seed succeeds.

It must steal sunlight and water from the tenacious weed.

With hope and care the seed begins to sprout.

It must fend off the occasional drought.

After a while the seed is a fully-grown stem.

Mother Nature can no longer extinguish it on a whim.

The stem will contain an invigorating power.

On it will grow a beautiful flower.

The flower will soon shoot its seeds into the air.

Once again the tenacious weed must beware.

Water, our great fear

rfrg

Water, without it we have no life.

It covers are planet in an eternal blue dye.

Whether ice or steam it will always be here.

Water, without it, we would have great fear.

Fear that our planet will be devoid of all life.

Water soothes and protects healing all wounds.

It possesses a power more pure than the moon.

Be warned waters power is fearsome and great.

It can decide our people’s fate.

Water rising and twisting, overwhelming the coast.

We must realize that water is our host.

A host that is spreading over our land.

Depopulating the areas of all man.

We must all share in one true fear.

Fear that our planet will be devoid of all life.

Hyena

rer

Hyenas agile and strong.

Their snickering frees them of all wrong.

Hyenas wander the African Plain.

Treating the hunt of a wildebeest like its a game.

If they don’t kill, it does not matter.

They scavenge others by using patter.

Hyenas by some are considered lazy.

To those who say that I call them crazy.

Brown furry creature they are not picky.

They would it eat what other animals assume are icky.

A lion appears he is alone.

He cannot find where the hyenas roam.

For the hyena is a smart he is already gone.

He rises early long before dawn.

How could you criticize such creatures?

When their resourcefulness is a involuntary feature.

War

fr

Why is it when men disagree?

They can’t do it peacefully.

When we were young in times of stone.

Laws of war were not yet known.

Iron and steel were the laws of the land.

Victory was decided by the strength of your hand.

Hulking warriors grew obsolete.

Gunpowder guaranteed their defeat.

With armies possessing cannon and rifle.

Only luck made certain a warriors survival.

The advents of weapons did not end there.

Soldiers soon found another reason to beware.

Automatic guns would shred a mans flesh.

Iron armor was not battle dress.

On top of that there were chemical attacks.

Leaving men to die and grovel like filthy rats

The worse of the weapons had not come.

A weapon that would cause life to be undone.

The advent of a weapon that contains so much power.

Would be humanity’s dying hour.

Weather, Our Foe

rt

If natural events had emotion…

Would a Volcano be angry and let loose a scream.

Would it be ignorant of the pain that it brings.

Would rain be kind or would it be cruel.

Would it know of its soothing power and cool.

Would snow be as aloof and cold as a winter’s day.

Would it know that its sends men into the fray.

Would a tornado be hyperactive ready to spin.

Would it know that it causes human chagrin .

Imagine if the seasons stood still.

Imagine if the Weather bent to humanity’s will.

Would humans care for the weathers pain.

Or would we think of its emotions as one big game.

At least things are the way they are now.

Humanity has an uncaring foe that will always be around.

Instinct

fr
A Bird flies in the sky

Why it does, it knows not why.

The Fish swims in the ocean depth

A creature on land it has not met.

A Snake is doomed to slither the jungle floor

Why doesn’t it wish for something more?

A broken man’s purpose is maimed

Society does not know his pain.

Humans have wandered and destroyed

They treat the Earth like it’s a toy.

They discard and waste it for the trash it is not

They allow beauty and innocence to forever rot.

They are intelligence

They are strong

Their strength allows them to commit so much wrong.

If they were gone, the Earth would be clean

The way it was always meant to be.

They must advert there fate

Or their demise will come at a sooner date.

The Cowardly Insect

er

An insect walks down a street.

Using its six insect feet.

The insect sees a spider walk.

It chases another insect down the block.

The other gets pierced with a sword-like fang.

The insects’ cowardice does not wane.

A day passes, the other insect is dead.

All that remains is a decomposed head.

The insect walks down the block.

Like its predecessor it gets caught.

The insect cries and pleas for help.

Another insect hears its whelp.

The other insect watches and runs away.

It decides to return another day.

A day passes, the other insect is dead.

All that remains is a decomposed head.
