Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and every year my family has a party at my grandparents’ house where my parents invite a bunch of their friends and we all eat dinner, and then we go trick-or-treating. But this year I’m too old for trick or treating, and I don’t want to hang out with my parents’ friends and their kids, so I’m going to my friend’s house. I’m probably going to go over to her house and get ready and redo my makeup and do my hair and then take pictures, and hopefully I’ll get to stay the night at my friend’s house because we’re probably going to be out pretty late. For my costume, I’m going to be an FBI agent, and my friends are going to be a firefighter. I’m hoping that this year’s the best Halloween yet because every other year has been boring, and I’m excited to not just be trick-or-treating.

Christmas in China

Lots of my American friends have been asking me about Christmas in China and how we celebrate the holiday. Well, since Christmas is not a Chinese traditional festival, we do not really celebrate it like the western cultures.

However, Christmas is becoming more well known and more popular. There are always Christmas tress near the big shopping malls and the trees on the roadsides will be decorated into colorful lights. There will be sales in the malls and Christmas music is everywhere.

Only some families opt to have a small Christmas tree during Christmas in China. Few homes have Christmas lights strung outside or candles in the windows. Malls, banks and restaurants often have Christmas displays, Christmas trees, and lights. Large shopping malls help usher in Christmas in China with tree lighting ceremonies.

As for the Santa Claus, it’s not uncommon to see a Santa Claus at malls and hotels across Asia. To draw some attention, some stores will have their staff dress up as Santa and probably do some performances. Chinese children do not really get gifts from people but everyone expects something from the mysterious Santa Claus.

I am really excited about this upcoming holiday. Hope it’ll snow this year!

Peppermint

I’ve a great, and unquenchable love for peppermint.

As a kid, I’d always grab the green and black swirly dinner mints at restaurants, a classmate having told me the red and white ones would make my eyes bleed.

But one fateful night, I accidentally ate one and thus, I was introduced to the wonderful world that is peppermint.

It became quite a problem around Christmas.

My mom would always buy twelve or twenty-four packs of candy canes to hang on the tree.

I believe my sisters were rather peeved when I ate most of them before we could decorate each year.

When I was seven, I got a candy cane corn snake.

And guess what I named her…

Easter Sunday

I remember up until about 5 years ago, I would always get up on Easter Sunday to my favorite breakfast, French Toast, and receive a basket that the “Easter bunny” had brought me. It was filled with all that green fake grass, colorful socks, candy, toys, and other fun things.

This year, there was an Easter egg hunt on campus. I didn’t attend, but I did think back on how much fun Easter used to be. Maybe it’s because I really love bunnies! They are just so darn cute I can’t help myself. But also, holidays were always a time that my family spent together. My dad would be off work for holidays and have free time to spend with us doing whatever we wanted.

Easter has always been a holiday that I didn’t quite understand. I mean, I know it’s a religious holiday, but my family has never been religious, yet we still celebrate it. I guess it’s just the fun of it all, having something to celebrate and an excuse to go out and do things that have become a tradition to your family.

This Sunday, I went to the farmers’ market and got coffee in town instead of participating in any traditional Easter Sunday activities. But, I really didn’t mind. I had a great time hanging out with friends. Maybe next year I will celebrate Easter again, but who knows?

Happy Easter!

An Easter Basket for Bunny Day

I think it’s pretty well known that I trip a lot.

I regularly get out of bed, trip, or simply fall on my face.

was proud to say I did not fail after getting up this morning.

Then I opened my door and tried to walk out into the hall.

I tripped over this:

Which is a pretty freaking awesome thing to trip over I might add.
I got: yellow peeps, lemon heads, Reese’s, pop rocks, airheads, Laffy Taffy, sweet tarts, a chocolate bunny, fruit gummies, sour punch things, and a bunch of other sweet, amazing stuff.
I also got a “Happy Easter, Emmy!” card from my little sisters.
So I just wanna say thank you to my family for getting me this awesome tripping hazard and thanks to my sisters for the cute card.  I’d be happy to face plant every morning if this was waiting for me.
I love you guys.  Happy Easter!

It’s THAT Month Again….

February is here, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

The gushy, romantic day for women.

The irritating, stressful day for men.

What is Valentine’s Day?

Some call it  a day to express your true love and passion.

Others, more cynically, call it Singles’ Awareness Day.

I think I fall somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.

I’m so not into the lovey dovey shout-my-personal-life-to-the-world thing.  But I’m not sulking around thinking, Oh my Ross Turner…I’m gonna be alone forever.  Although, I do enjoy the candy part.

I think the Day of Hearts is good for showing your friends and family how much you appreciate them!  I suggest dividing up your time, not just spending it all with your inamorato/inamorata.

One major theme of all V-Days is the unrequited love thing.

Oh yes, you ALL know what I’m talking about.

I bet some of you have even written cheesy love poems.

This week, I had to do that for school.  I wrote some pretty bad poems.  And I mean horrible poems.

I’m  no love poet.

But got some inspiration late Wednesday night and wrote my least awful poem yet.

I entered it in our school’s love poetry contest.

Stay tuned, all you lovers, my poem’s coming your way.
