what I’ve been playing on the piano pt 2

Imagine rainfall, accompanied by the sound of warm piano slowly picking away at the layer of your sorrows, that’s how I feel when I play Laura by Erroll Garner. It’s a song I’ve been learning lately, and one of the hardest and technically challenging songs I’ve tackled this year- but most rewarding. The arpeggios are INCREDIBLE.

the rain last week made me want to go back to playing more moody jazz. Pieces with really pretty and new york city-type chords. Songs like Almost Blue (Chet Baker), and Scenery (Ryo Fukui).

amore mio aiutami by Piero Piccioni is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I learned on the piano. I can’t stop playing it. Another one like it is Lujon by Heny Mancini

I found one of my Dad’s old Billy Joel books, and I’ve been playing the music (that I could play) in there too. Billy Joel is the master of complex and heavenly chord progressions. I especially liked Just the way you are, and The Stranger (interlude).

Surprisingly, George Michael and Sade’s songs, although very slow, are a blast to play on the piano. Their melodies are so satisfying to play.

Also, I watched the pianist 2 days ago

Jazz

I have been listening to quite a bit of Jazz lately. Exploring the brass of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.

The upbeat rhythms and adventurous melodies get me excited to ordinarily mundane tasks like cleaning and doing math homework.

It gives everything a unique feel, and keeps me excited to do everything. I used to play Jazz, but I fell victim to the sports requirement for my last school. Jazz still plays in my soul, and whenever it plays that melody is reborn.

Currently, I have been listening to songs like “I’ll Remember April” played by Miles Davis.

The running bass line gives the song consistency while Davis creates beautiful melodies with his natural musicality.

It infuses the rhythm into ones soul, and plays against your own heartbeat.

Bebop
by Dizzy Gillespie is also a fantastic example of this upbeat style. The drummer’s play of the cymbal, and the fast tempo creates a nice sense of controlled chaos that is the essence of the style.

Little Dragon.

Little Dragon.

Enjoy laying in bed, relaxing on the sofa or chilling outside on a warm night? I have the perfect music for you and it comes in the form of Little Dragon.

Little Dragon is an electronic band from Sweden. Immediately you hear electronic and think how can this be relaxing in any way. For those who think that, not all electronic is crazy club, beat filled music. Being classified as electronic means that a band uses synths and other electronic equipment in some form in their music.

The band came together in 1996 releasing two albums since they formed, Little dragon in 2007, Machine Dreams in 2009 and then Ritual Unions last year.

Since coming together the four-man group has gained lots of support from indie lovers across the globe. They also have produced songs with famous groups such as the Gorillaz.

Little Dragon blend different music sounds together to create calm, cool and relaxing rhythms.  Throughout their albums they sample different genres, drawing from sounds of soul and pop and jazz and blending them with the smooth vocals of lead singer, Yukimi Nagano.

This band produces lively but relaxing music that is perfect for any evening, so give them a listen.
