Football or Futbol?

Chad Ochocinco just finished his first day of tryouts for Kansas City’s MLS team.

I know… WTF right?

Well, apparently Ochocinco has had a longtime dream of being a soccer player, and thanks to the NFL lockout, he has the chance to make his dream a reality.

With almost forty reporters present at the tryouts, Ochocinco had a lot of questions coming his way. “Why would it be?” Ochocinco asked in reply to the notion that it was another one of his now famous jokes. “What you rather have me do during a lockout? Go get arrested, get in trouble? Act like Charlie Sheen? I’m one that never gets in trouble, I do nothing wrong. I just try to have fun.”

After the practice, Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said Ochocinco was “very coachable” but that he wouldn’t make any judgments yet.

Ochocinco had a couple of things to say about the tryout on his twitter, but said to reporters after the game, “I want to live out a dream, whether I make it or not,”

The Ventura County Fusion

For the last 3 years, I have been working part-time with a professional football team in the city of Ventura. The team, The Ventura County Fusion, is going into its fifth season in the PDL.

The PDL is the fourth tier of professional football in the United States. That does not sound like it would make a team prestigious but the Fusion are an exception.

The Fusion have played teams from the highest level including Burnley and Everton. They have also played team such as Real Salt Lake, Columbus Crew and most recently the Portland Timbers (the Fusion were the first team to play Portland’s new MLS team).

In 2009 the Fusion won the PDL Championship, an incredible feat for a team in only its third season. The PDL is made up of 64 teams and the Fusion topped them all. In their last season they finished first place In the Southwest Division of the Western Conference.

Non-English Football

Because Manchester United did not win today, I do not feel inclined to talk about the EPL. All I will mention is that Manchester City looked remarkably like Mark Hughes’ side of last year in their unimpressive draw to Birmingham.

But on to football in the rest of the world. I do not usually like to talk about the MLS because the football is sub-par to say the least. The team that I support is the LA Galaxy, being the team that I have seen play the most times, going to games at a very young age with my father. They beat the Seattle Sounders to make it all the way into the Western Conference Championship.

Los Angeles Galaxy

This is not a huge feat for the Galaxy; one would expect them to make it al least this far with players like David Beckham and Landon Donovan. But the Galaxy have a habit of not being able to score goals in big games. I am happy to see them make it this far and I hope that they win the league title after their extremely disappointing finish last season (they lost on penalties in the final).
