The soccer headlines have been dominated by the news that Liverpool and their owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks are at war. The American owners are in about £237 of debt which in about 376 million dollars. That means that Liverpool cannot buy players and because of that they are suffering.
They are in the relegation zone (or for you non soccer fans, the bottom three teams that get knocked down to the lower division at the end of the year). This has caused a major rift between the fans, coach, players and the owners. The American boys want to sell the club but they have to act quickly because the Royal Bank of Scotland, which holds the debts, will seize the club if the debts are not paid off by October 15th.
This news brings up a larger point for me; the fact that so many teams in England are owned by Americans.
America is not so opened to soccer as a country but so many of the English teams are owned by Americans. This is partially due to the fact that we have many rich people and sports are good money but it still seems to be a conundrum.
Manchester United, the largest and greatest sports team in the world, is owned by the same incompetent people who own Disneyland and the Tampa Bay Bucs.
This is a large concern for English football fans that the one sport besides rugby and cricket (which is not a sport, kinda like baseball) that they are better at is being taken over by Americans. America hates to lose, but we always lose at soccer. But by buying the clubs, we can’t lose because we control the game. In my mind American rich people should stick to buying vulgar American sports teams and let the English keep their sports.
