Spoiler Alert?

I went to see Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 yesterday, and I was more than enthusiastic with the results. I was paying strict attention to the scenes and details and I found only three important things that they either altered a little bit or left out entirely.

Compared to all of the other Harry Potter movies, this is phenomenal.

The only major things they left out or changed in the movie that JK Rowling wrote in the book were the goodbyes between Harry and the Dursley family, Hedwig‘s death (sadface), and a mural Luna Lovegood had painted on the ceiling of her room.

In the book, Harry’s cousin, Dudley Dursley, gives Harry a strong hug goodbye and confesses how he never hated Harry, not after he saved his life in Book Five. In the movie, however, Harry just watches them drive away in their car, never to be seen again.

In the book, Hedwig was carried between Harry’s legs as he was wedged in the side-car of Hagrid‘s (at one time, Sirius’) flying motorcycle. Hedwig’s cage started to slip out of the side-car, and a curse that was aimed at Harry hit Hedwig instead, sending her, dead, plummeting towards the ground. In the movie, Harry had set Hedwig free just before he took off flying with Hagrid, and then Hedwig came out of nowhere, clawing at the face of a Death Eater who then killed Hedwig. Although the movie gave Hedwig a much more heroic death, it is not the way it was supposed to happen.

And the most important thing they left out, to me, at least, is a mural that Luna painted on her ceiling. It was a painting with Ron, Harry, Hermione, Neville Longbottom, and Ginny Weasley. It read something to the extent of “My Friends,” and to me, was a very deep a loving insight to the thought-to-be-crazy character. But in the movie, they did not show Luna’s room at all, which was upsetting, because I was waiting the entire movie to see that mural come to life.

But besides those three details, the movie was phenomenal and accurate, and honestly more than any die-hard Harry Potter fan could have asked for.
