A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do

Ladies and gentlemen, pay attention so you don’t get me wrong.

Just like the majority of American viewers on July 8th 2010, I just loved having an hour of my free time devoted to some creep in a purple dress shirt form a relevant sentence only to break the collective heart of an entire state. I just loved it.

Some may call him arrogant, some, overrated, some may call him a straight up a-hole, but hear me out here: “the decision” is seeming to work out, not just for The Miami Heat, but for LeBron James himself in more ways than one when it comes to winning basketball games.

With the Cleveland Cavaliers winning only one conference title since James’s rookie season in 2004, the team would consistently get to the playoffs with the talent that they had built around James, however, they just could not seem to hoist one up to the rafters. So come game 5 of the western conference semi finals last year, you could simply tell by his lackluster play, that King James was ready to step down from his Cleveland throne. Granted it wasn’t the smartest time to do so, but the point was made. With 9 turnovers and only 3/14 shooting, he left to boos from empty seats in his last Cleveland home game.
Here’s some ammo for why this was a terrible gesture: we’ve seen players who have simply wanted out and made that public: Manny Ramirez, Shaq, Latrell Spreewell, Allen Iverson, Keyshawn Johnson, yet feuds are usually always put on the back burner during the playoffs, the most critical time of the year.

Anyway, back to what’s at hand. Everything James has been doing lately has had some method to the madness. First off, let’s drop the incident after the Cavs lost to the Magic in the 09 playoffs. James was quoted as saying, “it’s hard for you to shake someone’s hand when you lose to them, I’m a competitor.” I can tell you from experience, that’s true. So with both positive and negative things being thought out, we can at least understand why LeBron chose South Beach rather than Akron, he chose it with thought.

Here’s a list of reasons why the move worked for James.

1: The chemistry is better. After the 2008 summer olympics, it was clear that Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and LeBron James all bonded quite well. It had been premeditated and planned that they would all try to play for the same team once their respective contracts expired. It has definitely shown this season with one winning streak running up to 13 games. In one win over Minnesota, James set a career high in assists with 12 and in another against Oklahoma City, James had the opportunity to hit the game winner with two defenders rushing him. Rather than shoot a contested shot, he fed the ball to Eddie House in the corner. House buries the shot, game’s over, Heat win. So for those who call him a ball hog, think again.

2: It’s a better chance to win a championship. Let’s not forget that basketball is a business as well as a sport. You, as a business man, what would you want? Security, incentives, you’d want to see something in return for your part right? Well James, in return for playing basketball to the best of his ability, receives a great time in Miami a.k.a party central, there are no income taxes, there’s the endorsements and last but not least, the most important reason of all, the prospect of an NBA championship ring. You have great chemistry with two other all stars, the best team in the east, and your demons have been left in Cleveland. Life is looking up for James at the moment.

I can go on with more reasons and say that he left a negative environment in Ohio in favor of a great possibility in Miami. His critics and criticizers have called the decision “callous,” “cowardly,” and “selfish.” I say, if you were a business man trying to find the best deal for yourself and you found it, you wouldn’t just say no. In a move earlier this summer that made us believe he sold his soul, we are left to think otherwise as King James rules in Miami as one of the guys, as opposed to the player we once knew with the weight of a city on his shoulders.
