Red, White, and…Orange?

Donald Trump is now our president. (I know, I wish it wasn’t true as well.) So far, both the climate change and LGBT rights pages have been taken off the official White House website, Trump has ended Obamacare, the Senate has officially elected a bunch of offensive, racist, and unqualified men to Trump’s cabinet, and it’s only Friday night! Oh, he also literally adopted a new slogan straight from “The Purge: Election Year” – the slogan “Keep America Great”. Yeah, I’m really wishing Trump actually took this “weekend off” like he said he would right about now.

First, let me touch on the whole Obamacare fiasco. Without Obamacare, we do not have an affordable health care plan in place. And, I really doubt Trump has been cultivating his own, considering that since November 7th, all he has been doing is hanging out with Kanye West, hate-tweeting, inciting the belief that racism, prejudice, and hate crimes are now “justified,” and, probably (definitely) getting spray tans.

I mean, should the first things Trump does in office be to terminate Obamacare and end awareness for climate change and LGBT rights on the White House page? We already had to listen to Three Doors Down and look at Trump’s orange pallor this morning. All of this in one day? It’s simply too much to handle for someone who isn’t the spawn of Satan.

But, just remember, we now have a President who is a “television personality” and an unofficial cast member of “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”!

Change Pending (Except at the ATMs): Obama in LA

Last Sunday I went and saw Barack Obama speak at the Nokia Theater in LA.  There weren’t really many other people preforming or speaking other than Los Angeles’ Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, San Antonio’s Mayor Julian Castro, George Clooney, Earth Wind and Fire, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Jon Bon Jovi and Stevie Wonder.

So, let’s try to do this succinctly.

Musically, Bon Jovi…was Bon Jovi (not a good thing), and Stevie Wonder…was Stevie Wonder (good thing).

Okay, now on to why I’m actually writing. Let’s go down the list of the three keynote speakers.

Antonio Villaraigosa came out looking like a promoter for San Manuel Indian Casino. His tie-less suit and unbuttoned top three buttons on his shirt made him fit right in with the LA crowd that was at the Nokia theater that night. But Villaraigosa swallowed his obvious bitterness about speaking before Julian Castro and gave a short speech to introduce the next acts and discuss his allegiance to president Obama. He threw his support behind Obama and welcomed everyone to the fund bolstering night that I was looking forward to.

I’m calling it.

That’s what the electoral college will read at the end of the presidential election, with Obama taking the win.

To me, this is the better of two outcomes. The term “lesser of two evils” comes to mind, but hey, that’s just the consequences of a two party system and an indirect democracy.

The two party system that America has into place is a way to funnel your choices down to two people you almost certainly disagree with. It is almost impossible for someone to agree entirely with Obama, or entirely with Romney. Even if you did agree with them 100%, it is then their work ethic that comes into play.

For example, I agree with Obama that Guantanamo Bay needs to be closed ASAP. In fact, I agree with him that it should have been done 4 years ago…Anyways, to me, the US needs to stop its weird romance with torture prisons and secret “interrogation techniques”, but that’s for another blog. My point is that while you may agree with a candidate, you may not agree with the way they get things done (or don’t get things done).

Another thing that I don’t like about the election system is how much it all depends on character. Many voters decide who to vote for just based of who they relate to more. Well hell, I don’t know about any of you, but I don’t want a president like me. If he was anything like me, we’d be taken over by Canada in a matter of days. I’d want someone smarter, stronger, and just all out better than me.

Now that I’ve gotten way off topic, I’d like to ask you who you believe is going to win, and by how much? What’s your count for the college?

The Buffett Tax

As some people worry about the money they spend on gas or groceries, a group of Americans sit back and watch their money flow in.

I do not mean to insinuate that millionaires and billionaires do not work hard because most of them do. However, I see no argument that their lives are anywhere near as hard as those who are living paycheck to paycheck.

Warren Buffett has over the years called for higher taxes for America’s uber-rich, and now it seems he might get it.

Obama is looking to propose the “Buffett Tax,” a new tax on wealthy Americans that would work to keep some of the wealthy from avoiding taxes and increase the rates that they pay.

Although it would only affect about 450,000 Americans, the tax could very much benefit the economy, which as we all know, needs all the help it can get.

I look back at the arguments I have heard on why the rich should not have higher taxes; they don’t deserve it, it wouldn’t really help, it’s not fair. But none of those arguments make sense to me.

Taxes are not a punishment, they are just a fact of life in a society like ours. If you enjoy the country you have then you better accept the idea of taxes.

Taxing the top 0.3% of Americans (which this would do) a higher amount could really help. And on top of it, the bill wouldn’t actually raise taxes, it would just eliminate some of the Bush tax cuts, which I think we can see did not work judging on where are economy is now.

I hope that this bill can get through Congress during their Dec. meeting on deficit reduction. I think that this could be a helpful bill, but on top of that, it just makes sense.

Jobs for America

How do we as a country lower the jobless levels. There is no doubt that it is a problem, the only question is how we fix it.

Obama‘s massive “Jobs for America” bill could potentially do a lot of good. Despite being a huge fan of Obama, I do see a couple of issues.

First is that I’m not so sure it will get through the house. Obama seems to be fairly confident and I know he has a bit more information than I, but with the general consensus of Republicans not supporting the bill, I don’t see how this is going to pass.

Secondly is the effectiveness. Just like with the health care bill, compromises could kill the effectiveness. We don’t know if the healthcare program will work but hopefully it does, but with compromise comes less progress. Obviously there is no way around compromise with the American system but I just don’t see how such a small redistribution of wealth will make such a large difference.

Employing teachers, emergency workers and other public helpers is a huge step in the right direction but will the boost from that be worth the $447 Billion put in to it. Are people going to save or spend with more money?

Hopefully if they have learned anything they will save, but for the sake of the US economy, we hope that they spend.

As I see it, this is a progressive move, despite my doubts. But ideally we could go after business and try to encourage them to hire through incentive. Tax the corperations that are switching technology with real people and see if there is a change.

It may seem immoral to go after those corperations but if you look at the amounts of money they are taking in that are not being taxed due to loopholes and interesting accounting, many would find the morals to be lacking heavily.

We are trillions, yes trillions, of dollars in debt. We can not act like the banks once did and pretend that our debts will go away given time. We are facing a financial crisis so large that it is scary as well as difficult to imagine. As painful as paying taxes may be, we need to suck it up and increase tax rates. The luxuries we have from the government are only in place due to taxes.

Jobs are the key to having a good economy and Obama is working to create jobs. Whether or not you support the bill, admitting the economy is in trouble and that jobs are the answer is a necessity. Support the bill and see where it goes, because in the end, we need help now.

Young Girl Longs To Meet Heartthrob Justin Bieber, Settles with Barack Obama Instead

Just a few months ago, fourteen-year-old Payton Wall wrote a letter to President Obama.

Rather than writing a letter as a homework assignment in her history class, Payton wrote to share a very personal story.

In this letter, Payton talked about her father’s death in the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centers, and did not forget to state her love for teen pop-star Justin Bieber.

“Justin Bieber inspired me to share my story,” said Payton, “I wrote a letter to the president a few months ago. I talked about how I lost my dad on 9/11 and how I like Justin Bieber.”

This past Monday, May 2nd, was the first time Obama saw this letter, as he read through the stacks of envelopes that piled higher and higher throughout the weeks.

Obama was immediately moved by Payton’s letter and invited her and her family to attend the May 5th ceremony at Ground Zero.

I read this story with a smile knowing that the victims and families of 9/11 were still being honored for their bravery, strength, and support.

And although Obama may not be able to schedule Justin Bieber’s tour, he did the best he could in giving her an amazing experience, and acknowledging her hardships and her strength.

An End to the Endless Game of Hide and Go Seek

It’s finally happened. Osama Bin Laden has been killed.

After years and years of hiding out from U.S. troops, he was killed Sunday after a firefight at a house.

I think that it’s kind of sad that we’re celebrating a death, in all honesty. Of course the man has done an unfathomable amount wrong, but a death is a death.

This man instigated the Twin Towers Attack, was a tyrant, and killed his own people, but he was also a good man in other ways.

It’s wrong to celebrate a death regardless of the wrong that he had done. Some people could look at former president George Bush and say the same thing. I’m sure that the whole Arab community would be thrilled to see that Bush had been killed. But as Americans, we shouldn’t be so thrilled.

For example, outside of the White House, Georgetown students are gathering and chanting “USA” and singing the national anthem. Do they not realize that within the next few days, weeks even, Osama’s followers and supporters aren’t going to be too happy with the U.S.?

It’s silly to think that there are no repercussions for killing a man who so severely influenced a whole nation and caused so much havoc to others. There are still members of the Al Qaeda out there, so why are people celebrating something that is not only sad, but terrifying! If someone killed Barack Obama, half of the U.S. would be outraged and want to seek revenge upon the killers country, right? Don’t you think that the Al Qaeda will do the same?

This whole thing perplexes me.

Mariah Carey’s Baby Bump

Just a few months ago, fans noticed an unfamiliar bump around Mariah Carey‘s usually fit and toned stomach. They were curious to know if Mariah Carey’s new tummy was a sign of pregnancy. Last October, Mariah Carey, American singing prodigy, confirmed the fans’ suspicions and announced that she was pregnant. Today, just a few hours ago, Nick Cannon, Carey’s wife, announced that they were expecting twins.

Nick Cannon informed the crew on 92.3 Now Radio that Mariah had first broke the happy news to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama after a performance.

“I haven’t even told my wife I was doing this, so I am probably going to get yelled at for not getting permission.” Nick Cannon stated.

Two years ago, Mariah and Nick suffered a miscarriage and were trying to keep the news relatively secret. According to Nick of a recent ultrasound, the babies are “healthy, in tip-top shape.”

Mariah is expecting the twins sometime in the upcoming spring, and the couple have yet to reveal the sexes of their twins. Fans are anticipating the arrival of the twins. Perhaps they will have Mariah’s voice or Cannon’s rhythm but only time will tell.
