A Great Day in Football

Today was a marvellous day for a soccer fan. Manchester United (the greatest team in the history of sports) finally got an away victory thanks to Chicharito, one of the new additions from the summer. He scored two goals, the first a wonderful header.

Another great team, Rangers, also won against the arch rivals Celtic.  The Rangers Celtic rivalry is far beyond that of any other rivalry in the world. This is because it is truly over religion, it is Protestants vs. Catholics. Many people have died due to the intense hatred between the two clubs.

I was able to experience this first hand while in Scotland. I was walking down a street in Oben wearing a Rangers jersey. I was passed by a young adult in a Celtic shirt who politely spit at me. However, by the Rangers Celtic rivalry standards that was tame. Every year people are beaten and sometimes killed for supporting the wrong team. This is also seen in places like Brazil where killings are common over football feuds. I love a good rivalry, its fun and it gives you something to be passionate about, but physical abuse is taking it way to far. But the rivalry between Rangers and Celtic make it so much fun to watch. And when Rangers win the day is great, and Manchester United winning makes the week great. I was recently told about a study in which male soccer fans had their testosterone levels tested before and after games all season long. The study concluded that when the teams of the men won, their testosterone levels went sky-high, giving them confidence and a natural high. But when their teams lost the levels went down. This is why I love sports, winning, even if it is your team winning, gives you a huge high. Today I get to enjoy that.

    • If I was in Fabio Capello’s situation, I would play my best striker. If Rooney is not on form and is not scoring goals, I would not play him. However, Rooney has a tendancy to come out of his slumps in big games so the pressure is on for Fabio and Sir Alex.
