Worst Person in Sports #3-Scott Williamson

Tom Williamson is putting his 2004 World Series ring up for auction. WHAT AN IDIOT! I don’t care how strapped for cash you are. Why would you sell a piece of sports history? That’s like Herb Brooks selling his gold medals from the 1980 Winter Olympic Hockey games. It’s just pure stupidity. Why would that even come to someone’s mind?

Was it guilt because he didn’t play a key role in the Sox’ winning the series? Only this scum knows.

If you are interested in purchasing this wondrous piece of history, here’s a picture of the stones and its ungrateful owner.

  1. When I first read this I thought that Herb Brooks did not get a medal. I was wrong.

“ln 1980, Herb Brooks ‘unofficially’ received one of the ‘extra’ gold medals they keep around in case of ties, etc. One of the people on the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Commitee made sure he got it. ”
Do coaches deserve medals? Herb Brooks was integral to the teams “miracle” run for Gold.

This summer they are starting a new Olympic tradition.

“However, beginning with this year’s Summer Olympic Games, The US Olympic Committee will honor coaches of winning athletes and teams with their own medal known as “The Order of Ikkos.”

An article was just published today about it:
    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/141/story/134492.html

Other countries have long rewarded coaches of Olympic medalists with awards and financial payouts (For instance, in the UK, coaches of gold medal swimmers get 10,000 pounds, silver nets 7,500, and bronze earns 5,000), so the creation of some sort of recognition for US coaches is welcome news – and it can only serve to keep us more competitive in international competition.”

  2. I think coaches most certainly deserve medals. A team is nothing without its coach. I have played on numerous athletic teams both in California and in New Jersey. I have been coached by many different people and believe that the player is only as good as his coach. The Miracle hockey team would not have succeeded without the leadership of Herb Brooks. One example of his questionable yet incredible coaching techniques was when the team tied Norway in an exhibition game. Following the game, Brooks forced his players to skate suicides for hours due to their disappointing play. Following that night, the team became a unit. They held each other up and became brothers. Without the coach, a team is nothing.

    • Here is my list of game changing coaches.

      1. Vince Lombardi: snubbed by the Giants he built a dynasty in Green Bay.

      2. Phil Jackson: Gritty player turned to Zen to get the most out of his troops.

      3. Tony Dungy: a class act

      4. Geno Auriemma: Doesn’t treat his women players like girls

      5. Any coach who is willing to make athletes better people. I know Mr. Titus adheres to this maxim. He’s a special coach, so cherish the opportunity. Memories are created by people not scoreboards.
