A Fantastic Start

Saturday’s football game against Lee Vining was a great game for us at OVS. The new players and the veterans had great games. Juniors Cody Triggs, Keaton Shiffman and John Olivo were just a few of the players that endured nearly ever play.

John Olivo also ran for one of the 8 touchdowns, shedding 5 tacklers on the way there. He had a second carry later on in the game resulting in 15 yards and a number of Lee Vining defenders with failed tackles.

Sophomore Masaki Takamatsu, in his first ever football game, ran for three touchdowns eluding the defense and shedding tackles on his way to the end zone.
He also caught a pass for his fourth touchdown of the day.

The pass, thrown by junior Grant Spencer, was caught between an opposing defender and Masaki broke the tackle and ran for the endzone.

Another player with a very strong showing was Junior Kolby Saucedo, who helped pave the way for some long OVS running plays with key blocking on numerous occasions. He was also a strong force on defense, posting a number of tackles that may have resulted in touchdowns otherwise. Unfortunately for Kolby and the rest of the OVS team, Kolby was sidelined later on with a dislocated knee cap while yet again stopping another opposing touchdown.

Junior Cameron Cuthbert caught his first touchdown pass from Grant while breaking yet another tackle before making his way into the end zone. He also caught a two point conversion.

Junior Cole McIntosh started at center for the Spuds, executing superior blocking and superior exchanges to Grant. He kept the offensive line under control while establishing strong double teams with his guards, John Olivo and Cody Triggs.

On defense, the Spuds were nearly unbreakable. The team was relentlessly chasing down the ball carrier on nearly every play. Except for a few early miscues, the defense was nearly perfect.

Juniors John Olivo, Cameron Cuthbert, Cole McIntosh, Grant Spencer and Keaton Shiffman were able to maintain a strong defensive front following the injury to Kolby Saucedo. Freshman Gene Kwon and senior Andrew Lee also had strong showings, playing cornerback following the injury and rotations of players.

In a display of athleticism Cole McIntosh and John Olivo combined for a brutal hit in the middle of the field, taking down a Lee Vining wide receiver. Afterwards John had to step out for a few plays to reset his dislocated shoulder.

Freshman Gene Kwon had to step in at kicker early on in the game when Junior Min Ung Choi left the game with a knee injury. He did a good job of replacing Min in special teams.

Freshman Kevin Wang rose to the occasion on special teams making two fantastic tackles, stopping Lee Vining’s forward progress.
