Trapped miners in Chile are finally reaching ground level again!

The 33 miners in Chile were stuck underground for over 2 months have finally been rescued. The men were in a gold and copper mine on August 5th when they became trapped.

The rescue effort to bring up the miners from 622 meters underground has been in effect for the past couple days. Each miner is placed in the rescue shaft and pulled up to the surface one at a time. The ride up the shaft takes about 15 minutes.

Families await their loved ones at the surface, in anticipation of hugging them once again after such a long and stressful separation. The rescue is scheduled to be completed by tomorrow.

As a precaution, when the miners get back to ground level, they must go through a series of medical tests to ensure that their health is sound. Millions of people around the world have been following the news and watching the rescue live on television. Both the miners and their loved ones are very lucky to have made it back safe and sound.

The Blackberry problem

In many countries today, such as India, governments are considering banning the Blackberry Messenger service primarily because it is a very easy way for terrorists to communicate. The service is a national security matter as the company is not able to trace messages sent across the network. Talk of the ban of BBM has been on for a while now, however the company seems intent on pressuring the government to give it more time to find a solution before the ban.

India, which had been under attack recently in Mumbia in the “Taj” Hotel, thinks BBM is a great way for terrorists to plan another such attack. India lost important Businessmen and Politicians under that attack. It is therefore taking extra care of its security and banning BBM is a step. The government has however decided that the ban should be put on hold till January 2011, after which the ban will be in progress unless the company comes up with a solution.

From Guns to Cyberspace

It started with Edward Smith in 1831 and now it has come to the internet. Hundreds of New York residents are victimized by a cyber robbery virus known as Zeus Trojan.

The headline reads: Dozens Charged In Schemes to Steal from Bank Accounts Using Computer Viruses. Who would have thought that the futuristic phenomenon known as “the World Wide Web” would eventually become our biggest threat to our safety? What do we do now that any stranger can have access to our most valuable personal information? Internet withholds information about us that we think is kept secret, but in reality the whole world can see it….and use it.

The scariest part is that all of these criminals are overseas. This “hackers community” started across the water in Eastern Europe and worked its way over to the Eastern shores of America and hopefully won’t get the chance to spread around the world. Let’s hope that it hasn’t happened yet. I’m positive that I’m gonna make darn sure my info is safe on the internet because if it’s not safe there then it’s not safe anywhere.

water

I haven’t showered in a week, because I now realize how important the water is.

In order to understand the water resource in California, our AP Environmental Science class took a camping trip to Owens Lake and Mono Lake. People in Los Angeles mostly get their water from these two lakes. In order to use the water, the government created diversions in Owens River and other rivers that flow into the lakes. The diversions control how much water will flow into the lakes and how much water will flow to LA region. As the population in LA grow rapidly, the need of the water increase. As the result of this situation, less and less water will flow into the lakes.

Crazy Scary Idea for Oil Spills

Strolling through internet for oil spill clean up ideas, I found something old, but still very crazy scary. Darryl Carpenter who works at Florida-based CW Roberts Contracting, and Otis Goodson have invented a brilliant, but so simple way to clean up oil spills.

He told Goodson, “Can you fill a large pan with water and oil, then grab a handful of hay and stir it in? Strain out the hay, then call me back and tell me what’s left in the pan.” Strangely enough, this strategy worked. I mean the results were stunningly successful.

So why not hay for about 300 oil spills occurring a year? Doesn’t sound that bad AT ALL.

Here is the video.

Tired.

It is a type of drowsiness that envelops your entire being. It wraps around your body in a warm embrace and then suddenly dunks you into the Atlantic Ocean. It is unavoidable. You may postpone it, but you cannot escape the overwhelming exhaustion that becomes your entire soul.

You try to keep your eyes open, but if feels as though 20 bags of cement are on top of each lid, forcing them down, down, down. You have to stay awake, you have important things to do that could not possibly wait until morning, but you cannot control your subconscious.

Every day, I will wake up tired. Every day, I will be longing to be in my bed, eyes shut, and drifting softly into my dreams. No matter how much sleep I get the night before, I will forever be tired.

I feel like I could fall asleep all day, but when it comes the time where I am in my bed, my eyes refuse to close. All of a sudden, I am wide awake, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Tired, drowsy, and sleepy turn into awake, distressed, and uncomfortable.

When the day comes that I wake up, well rested and ready to start my day, I will be no less then shocked.

When the day comes, if the day comes?

I am awaiting it.

Thackerays critized

The most powerful family in Mumbai, India, has finally been opposed by none other than their private college‘s dean, Dr Frazer Mascarenhas S J.  The young and active leader of the Shiv Sena, Aditya Thackeray was popularly criticized by the dean of St. Xavier College for his immaturity at handling a book written against politics by an alumni, Rohinton Mistry.

The book ‘such a Long Journey‘, was shortlisted for the prestigious, Booker Prize, and Mistry is one of the proudest alumni’s of the University. However, members of the Shiv Sena, the political party under the Thackerays, are burning copies of the book to show their disagreement with it. One of students also asked another college in Mumbai to take the book off their syllabus.

The Dean‘s opinion was, “It is inconceivable that in the 21st century, a political party will not show the maturity to accept criticism and answer it by the evidence of its own actions. Is it not unreasonable, that literature is banned, merely because it dares to critique us? St. Xavier’s College regrets that this book, written by an alumnus, and widely acclaimed in the literary world, has been treated in this manner.”

read this in honor

This is just sickening. Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi is dead by a terrible cause. Has the world no decency? A boy in Texas and another in California have also tragically ended their lives in despair brought on by intolerance and bullying. This is why this needs to be taken seriously.

Julia Roberts adopts Hinduism

At one point being the most highly paid and top actress in Hollywood, Julia Roberts is now a practicing Hindu. The 42-year-old gorgeous, Oscar-winning actress, who owned the hearts of millions with her performance in Pretty Woman, says she goes to the temple with her family to “chant, pray and celebrate.”

Julia Roberts took to Hinduism during her performance in, Eat, Pray, Love, for which she travelled to India and visited the ashrams for spirituality. Roberts also brought her three children along with her to experience the  calm and the peace.

Swami Dharamdev of the Hari Mandir, where Eat, Pray, Love was shot, said that prior to leaving for Bali for rest of the movie, Roberts requested the priest to pray for her mother. Her mother had been ill for a while.  The Priest recalls telling her that ” she may choose not to eat or love, but don’t forget to pray. Make that an integral part of your life, not acting in this film.” Roberts smiled and nodded affirmatively

78 Year Old Shirley-It’s never too late.

You’re always told it’s never too late, yet who believes it. Even now at the age of 16 I numerously find my self saying it’s too late. It’s one of those great excuses we begin to use, as we grow older. An excuse placed in fear of looking foolish or embarrassing ourselves, subsequently a fear of failure.

Countless times the old wise tale has been proven incorrect yet we continue to believe it.  Today that perception changed as I read the inspiring story of an O.A.P.

Before I tell the story I belief I should explain the term O.A.P. An O.A.P or old age pensioner is someone past the age of 65. In Britain this is retiring age. Once you reach this age you reap numerous benefits in order to provide care and support for you in your final years. These include free public transport, discounted prices, and of course the all important pension.
