last home game

On Saturday, seniors had their last football home game at lower against Laguna Blanca.

Unfortunately we didn’t come out with victory, but everyone put their best effort into the game. We all know that this game will be a hard one. However, every senior wanted to have a game with no regret, and other underclassmen also want to give their best to the seniors.

We run hard, hit hard, and tackle hard. Despite that we got hurt, but it is worth it in our last home game. Although we lost it, we still have our last game at Lancaster Baptist on next Saturday!

Off to a Good Start

Today, the Lakers played a magnificent game against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers cruised past this team with tremendous ease and ability with a final score of 107-83. The great success is due to the Lakers’ strong bench. With players like Shannon Brown, Matt Barnes and Steve Blake, the media has dubbed the bench the “Killer Bees” (due to their last names).  The Lakers have had an amazing season and pre-season so far. Their main worry though, is the Celtics. At the beginning of the year I would have said it was the Heat (because they have LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh), but they lost to the Celtics several days ago. If I were to make an assumption about the championship, then I would say the finals will be between the Lakers and the Celtics, with the Lakers winning in six games.

Lets Talk About Refs

Yesterday, during the match in which the greatest team in the world (Manchester United) defeated Tottenham Hotspurs, a very questionable call occured. I would put a video of this goal up, but the Footballing Government has removed it from the internet due to how controversial it is. Here instead is a description of what happened: Man U’s Portuguese winger Nani dribbles into the penalty box, gets pulled down by his jersey (an obvious penalty). Nani falls down, puts his hand on the ball and looks at the ref, who has not made a call. Goalkeeper for Tottenham assumes it is a hand ball and picks up the ball to place it for the free kick. Nani looks again at the ref and realizes that the ref has not blown his whistle. Nani then kicks the ball into the back of the net from the goalkeepers feet. Chaos ensues.

To most football fans, this was one of the weirdest moments they have ever witnessed. What happened in my perspective was a communications breakdown. The goal keeper for Tottenham (Heurelho Gomes) is from Brazil, Nani is from Portugal and the ref is from England, already there is a language barrier. Although the ref did miss an obvious penalty call, his non-call on the hand ball in my mind was the right call. As a referee, we are encouraged to make the game flow as much as possible while maintaining the fairness and safety required. Whether the ref blew his whistle or not, Tottenham got the ball, but by blowing his whistle he would have slowed down the game. In reality karma happened because Man U got the goal that should have come from a penalty kick. Now if I was a Tottenham fan I would not be angry at the center ref, I would be furious at the linesman. The linesman raised his flag when he saw the handball, which is his job. The center official however, get to decided whether or not to call it. Players are told to play the whistle because it’s the only thing that really matters. yes, he did raise his flag. However the ref made the right call and the keeper messed up. And anyways, Man U would have won even if they hadnt scored because…they ARE the greatest team in the world.

Unacceptable

Some people give soccer a bad name. Bolton Wanderer’s Ivan Klasnic was arrested over rape allegations. This is not the first time a soccer player has made a mistake like this.

Ivan Klasnic

Bolton is currently mid-table and Klasnic has been a reliable players throughout last year and this years campaign. However he cannot be a help to the team if he is in jail. Soccer players (and successful athletes in general) are often accused of rape by gold diggers and drug addicts. Kobe Bryant felt the effect of being wrongfully accused of rape when in Denver.

World Series Review, Game 1

With 2010 being dubbed “The Year of the Pitcher,” it seemed fitting that two Cy Young award winners would match up in Game 1. With the world series contenders ironically knocking off the contenders of LAST YEAR’S World Series, this one will surely lack the buzz of last year’s, yet it will still provide a good show.

Last night, the San Francisco Giants pushed the Texas Rangers off a Cliff by winning the pitcher’s duel turned slugfest 11-7.

A Great Day in Football

Today was a marvellous day for a soccer fan. Manchester United (the greatest team in the history of sports) finally got an away victory thanks to Chicharito, one of the new additions from the summer. He scored two goals, the first a wonderful header.

Another great team, Rangers, also won against the arch rivals Celtic.  The Rangers Celtic rivalry is far beyond that of any other rivalry in the world. This is because it is truly over religion, it is Protestants vs. Catholics. Many people have died due to the intense hatred between the two clubs.

Not Just For Practice

On Sunday, October 10th, mef and OVS English teacher Brad Weidlich attended a tennis marathon at the local courts of Ojai’s beautiful Libbey Park. Playing 56 games in a matter of 4 hours deemed to be just as strenuous as it seems, but gave me an absolutely amazing Sunday morning. Competing with other players within my age range and skill level, I was able to enhance my tennis skills as well as make friendships in the process.

But these tennis matches were not just for practice.

OVYF, the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation, is a program designed to enhance the lives of Ojai Valley youths through recreational activities, mentor programs, and leadership events.

Every year, the OVYF holds a tennis marathon in which both adults and children gather to compete in over 5o games of doubles, no ad scoring tennis.

But these games aren’t the only thing that makes this day special.

Before playing tennis on that warm sunday afternoon, each youth player was required to raise a minimum amount of 150 dollars while the adults took on the even bigger challenge of raising a minimum of 350 dollars. With the help of relatives, friends, and the Ojai Valley School, Mr. Brad Weidlich and myself were able to raise a total amount of 650 dollars that directly benefit the youth of Ojai.

Mr. Brad Weidlich, a wonderful English teacher with a genuine desire to help the local Ojai community, inspired me to go out and make a difference. And just like that, we did.

My Passion for Volleyball

Volleyball has always been a passion of mine. I love the sound of tennis shoes scuffing against the waxed gym floor, the feeling you get when you celebrate a victory with your teammates, coming into the center of the court to cheer each other on, the release you feel when you snap that ball down onto the other side of the net, and then quickly prepare for it to come right back. I love that in volleyball, you have to always be on your toes, low and ready to play every ball. The trust and relationships that develop between you and your teammates is something truly beyond words. I cannot express the love that I have for each and every girl on my team. Volleyball is all about team work and always trusting your team mates to do their best with every ball that comes their way, but, if they make a mistake, you are right there to tell them “shake it off, we got this, good try.” I know that this sport will always be a big part of my life and i am happy to share my experience with other girls at OVS.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Today I am faced with a dilemma. The question has popped up, if a player does not see his future at a club as being positive should he leave? If I was playing at a club, and the future was not filled with big and shiny trophys, I would leave, if I could. But what if that club raised me, got me where I was, and always has the potential of winning? Wayne Rooney has made up his mind, he wants out of Manchester United. Although I cannot say I am happy with his choice, I can not say that I would not do the same thing.

The Tibetan Power Release

Colm Barrett, a junior at Ojai Valley School, had never played a down of football in a Spuds Uniform. As a new addition to the school’s team, he wasn’t slated in the starting lineup, but he would soon make his impact during last Saturday’s contest against Dunn.

Barrett wearing #7, reminiscent of the former Ojai great Hunter Helman, scored Ojai’s second touchdown of the game, a post pattern on a pass from QB Gunnar Helman to put OVS in the lead 15-14.
