Prom 24′

This year I had much more fun on prom maybe it was because my expectations were so low from the disappointing previous year. This year I brought my absolute best friend Kyra and we had a great time. I have been to a couple public school dances with Kyra, and I told her this was going to be nothing like those and instead much more underwhelming. After school, she came over and we began to get ready we started with our hair. I had this realization when I was looking at her through the mirror no matter the venue or the weather. I was determined to have a good night. Once we finished getting ready, we took photos and headed to school. We came to Mieke’s room and talked about where we thought the venue would be. After a long van ride, we arrived at a country club. It was super pretty, and the food was great. We all went to take sunset photos and went to the photo booth. Although there may not have been as many people as the public school dances or an afterparty it was still amazing.

Prom

This year I am not excited for prom at all. Last year I was excited but quickly was disappointed. The school hypes up Prom so much and I was bringing my friend from outside of school. I had gotten my hair and nails done. I was ready when the day came I woke up showered and headed to school after school my friends and I headed to one of our friend’s houses to get ready. Once we were ready we all took photos and drove to school. Once we all got on the buses my excitement diminished we were all smushed 3 to a seat and I began to sweat. My face and hair began to feel oily and I felt sticky. I was hoping the mood would brighten once we got to the venue, but I was wrong. The venue was a casino with no windows and the food was not great. We still made the best of the night but it didn’t live up to my expectations.

Questions

What is your favorite food? What is your favorite color? What is your favorite movie? It is always very difficult to narrow it down to one favorite thing when asked such questions. Many of these questions are asked to get to know a person or to start a conversation, whether it is a new acquaintance or a friend. When people ask me what color I like, I always say white, black, or gray. But inwardly, I think that blue is my favorite too, or green. However, when I am asked such a question, I have to narrow it down to one answer because I am not easily asked to give more than one answer. You always have to ask yourself. A particularly difficult question is when I am asked what my favorite food is. Usually, I answer with white rice, but I can never narrow it down to just one because white rice is delicious also with meat, fish, and other ingredients. I always spend a lot of time thinking about the questions people ask me, but when I am asked what I like, what comes to my mind instantly may be a few things that I really like the most.

Gratitude

As my seventeenth year of life is approaching, I’ve been thinking a lot about of the things I’m grateful for. It’s easy to get caught up in day to day life and be so focused on what could be in the future and less about what is happening now. It’s easy to take things for granted, and it’s human nature really. Living life sort of slowly in a way helps to appreciate it better. Looking at simple things in a different light and appreciating its beauty is something that I’ve grown to make a habit of. I love so many things and I have a lot more to give for the rest of my life. I know I cannot make much of a striking difference in this world but I do know that I love. I’m grateful for having a life of health with beautiful family and friends. Social media prompts and conditions us to always wanting more. Maybe something material, or an unrealistic life that we simply just cannot lead. We have to look at what we have.

Licenses

Getting several licenses is one of the things I’ve been wanting to do lately. Getting a driver’s license is one of the credentials that I am most likely to obtain soon. I’ve been attending driving school once a week, and I want to earn my license as soon as possible so that I can drive with my parents and friends. During my summer break, I also want to pursue getting a license as a manicurist. Since going to a nail salon is difficult and expensive when living in a dorm, I have lately taken up doing my own nails.I will be able to do a lot of different things and have a lot of fun if I can create my own nails. My mother is a licensed foot massage therapist, eyelash extension specialist, and manicurist, so I thought it would be fantastic if I could get certified for my pastime. Additionally, I’d like to give becoming a licensed home builder a shot. In addition to being a certified real estate agent, my father holds other real estate-related qualifications. I found it really amazing that he pursued independent study after turning adulthood.Like my father, I want to grow up and be an independent adult who can travel the world on his own after graduating from college. I want to focus on my studies right now so that this summer I can get my manicurist certification.

Math, Furniture, and Consumerist America

I’ve always considered myself to be fairly good at math.

So when I’d drive by this certain furniture on the side of the highway that said “7 days until closing”, and a week later, it’d say “6 days until closing,” I knew something was up.

This furniture store—which I’d always pass by on me and my mom’s weekly Costco runs—was lying straight to the face of its customers, and no one was saying anything.

This made me mad.

I didn’t take ten years of Kumon to be tricked by a marketing gimmick by some dreary furniture store. I knew that a week later, the sign would still say the same, the furniture store would still be open, even though six days had obviously passed.

Though this enlightened me to the lies that surround us in everyday life, my mom told me that if you paid attention, these lies were everywhere.

So, it’s this furniture store’s fault that I have trust issues. It’s this furniture store’s fault that I’m a skeptic.

Like Donald Glover once said,

This is (consumerist)America.

Prom

I really love the idea of prom but it always ends up being super weird. I wish that school dances weren’t so awkward. I think it is us that make it awkward because if we all just decided that we were going to have fun and do things together then it wouldn’t be. Unfortunately because we don’t have the social skills to get along with each other, getting ready is my favorite part. That’s why I like dress dinner so much. I like it because it’s an excuse to get ready and put work into myself.  I like to have something to look forward to and talk about leading up to it, but things like that are just never worth the hype.  Although I have that mindset I get my hopes up every time that it’s going to be different and try to make the most of it. So maybe this year will be different.

I love to get ready. A lot of people hate picking out their outfits and taking a long time to do their hair, but I love it when I have time. I get to relax and do self-care all day, then get ready for a fun, nicer dinner. I love getting my nails done and picking out cute dresses while sun-kissed in the summer. Picking out blush shades and watching makeup tutorials. Sitting with a romance movie on as background noise while I have a face mask on my face in my silk pajamas. I sip my smoothie or matcha and read a book, cuddled up in a blanket or watching the sunset along the beach. Silence, quiet, noiseless. The world is quiet with the peace of getting ready. In the end, I am filled with confidence and self-love. Making fun videos and watching them back later of myself blabbing on and on about the most random things while I get ready is something I find to be so fun.

My Updated Thoughts On Blogs

I think one of my first ever blogs was on how much I really don’t like them. I talked for a decent-sized paragraph about how they are annoying, a waste of time, and how I wish we did not have to do them. However, recently, I have had a little bit of a relapse of judgment regarding blogs. I still think it is hard sometimes to come up with a prompt. This week is an example of that, as I could think of nothing else to write about but a topic I have done before. It’s not very original also in the sense that I am writing about what I am writing, if that makes sense. Anyway, although I still feel like coming up with prompts is difficult sometimes, I am starting to enjoy the blog-writing process more. More often, ideas will come to me immediately that actually seem fun and interesting to talk about, and I don’t feel like I am forcing anything when writing about them. Additionally, I have started at least brainstorming and, most of the time, writing my blogs a week in advance. That way, they feel like less of a chore and struggle to get them submitted on time before the Friday midnight deadline. I feel like I kinda see the point of them more in the past. They are a creative outlet – a place where we can write without feeling confined to a story idea that we don’t have any interest or passion regarding. In conclusion, I have less hatred than I have had in the past on the subject of blog writing but don’t try to make me admit that out loud.

My spring break plan……..

There are only about two months left in this school year. Prom and spring break will be here in one week. I am not sure what I will do each time the break comes. To be honest, I honestly don’t know what to do since I have done most of the sightseeing I can do in LA. I will be staying with my roommate this break, but the thing I am most looking forward to is meeting up with my Japanese friends on Saturday and Sunday at first weekend of break. I usually don’t get to see them very often and spend a lot of time with them, so I am excited to going out to lunch, watching movies, and so much more. Also, it will be my roommate’s birthday during this break, so I would like to make it a memorable day by going on a small trip somewhere, riding many roller coasters at an amusement park, or having a nice dinner. Of course, I also want to go to beverly hills and do our usual routine that we usually do when we are at LA. After spring break, summer break is only 7 weeks away, so I want to make the most of my remaining time as an 11th grader.
