New Winter

I’m excited for Christmas this year because I’m almost guaranteed a white Christmas. My family has recently bought a new house in Mammoth. This house is a house where everyone gets their own room so that means less fighting and everyone getting their own personal space. Since it’s large enough for my parents to be convinced we’ll be able to enjoy it, we’re packing up and spending Christmas in Mammoth; hence the white Christmas. I’m hoping that we’ll all be able to enjoy Christmas and the entirety of winter in Mammoth without stepping on each others’ toes. Everyone could fit into our old place but I have a feeling that the new house will be a much more inviting place for the whole family.

Since we’re going up for both Thanksgiving and part of Christmas break, I’m also hoping that I’ll really be able to improve my snowboarding skills. Last year I randomly decided that I wanted to Snowboard so I went all in and bought all the gear and now it’s too late to go back. So far, I’ve actually liked the process of learning how to snowboard significantly more than skiing. I don’t regret my decision at all.

I’ve never been a pro at anything on the mountain, I’m the type of person who would get in your way. To me it’s never been competitive, the whole thing is a joke in the best way possible. When I want to go fast I do, but I thoroughly enjoy face-planting in the snow by trying tricks I know I will never be able to accomplish and taking my time on the way down. Long story short, I’m looking forward to a fun winter.

Shredding the Absolute Gnar

This last weekend I went on a school trip to Mammoth Mountain, and I am learning to snowboard. On the first day of the trip, I did some pretty basic tricks and went on many runs including many greens and blues. The next day, I went to shred the park and learn how to do a couple of new tricks on a snowboard.

The first video was my third attempt at hitting a cannon. A cannon is a large cylinder that is slid on and can be done sideways or straight on. I opted for hitting it straight on as it is much easier than hitting it sideways or in a boardslide. Doing a cannon looks really easy and the only hard part of riding on the cannon is getting on it because some of them have a small gap in between the cannon and the jump onto it.

The second video was a different cannon in the park that I hit after feeling much more comfortable on the cannons and my snowboard. I hit this obstacle with a little more speed and from a different angle than the previous cannon.

Not every trick is a success at first and sometimes you fall, I’m planning on going back and destroying the rail. During spring break, I am going back up to June Mountain and my plan is to go to the park and destroy all the obstacles. I also might be getting my own snowboard soon, I am thinking about getting a Yes. board or a Signal board.

I want a Board with a mix of park and all-mountain potential because I really enjoy hitting rails and then taking a break and going to some powder and hitting some groomers.

X Games 15: Git Some.

Today I found out that the winter X Games just happened. Starting on January 27th and ending the 30th, they went down almost exactly as expected. Shaun White won the gold in men’s half pipe competition, with his worst run in the elimination round scoring five points higher than the second place Scotty Lago’s best run and being the only person to have any runs in that round that scored in the 90’s (both of his were in that range with run 1 scoring a 90.33 and run 2 scoring a 92.00). His second finals run scored him a 97.33, which tied the previous X Games record, also held by White, making this his fourth consecutive X Games gold.

The rest of the events were relatively similar, with an American winning a medal in almost every event and many athletes winning what they were predicted to win. The biggest surprise of the Games was when Norway’s Torstein Horgmo, with multiple broken ribs from an earlier crash, landed the first triple cork in X Games history. “It’s probably the stupidest thing I’ve done in my whole life,” he told ESPN after the jump. After landing the triple cork, he unstrapped from his board and removed his helmet, which he then punted into the crowd. With a score of 80 for the run, he won the gold, the only one this year for Norway.

The X Games remained a fun and exciting showcase of extreme winter sports, with Shaun White recently being rated the second most marketable athlete in the world after Peyton Manning, and Torstein Horgmo landing a trick never before done in the X Games. This was the kind of X Games you didn’t need to watch a lot of, but in the end, still had some parts that made the featured sports, well, extreme.
