Annabel Lee I

This post is going to be part of a series based on the love story of Edgar Allan Poe‘s poem “Annabel Lee.”

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

Than to love and be loved by me…

The words roll around in my mind, marbles on a marble floor.

I stand alone on a grassy hill, watching the gray clouds reflected in greenish water.  A storm is coming.  The ocean churns and froths beneath my empty stare, bubbling up like pus from a great wound.  But all I can think about is my heart, lying in the tomb.  Cold, lonely, lost.

My Annabel is gone.

Sweet Annabel Lee, my first, my only love.

I had never loved God or His angels.  Even as a boy I was ever skeptical of the mercy and kindness others painted Him with.  But I have never hated those divinities more than I do at this very moment.

Those jealous seraphs killed my beloved, and God Almighty allowed it to happen.  I feel myself shaking with rage and grief.

Closing my eyes, I think back to the day I met Annabel.

I had been playing at the beach, frolicking gaily at the shore just beyond the reach of the waves.  The sky was vivid lapis lazuli, the breeze, light and sweet.  I do not remember the water being particularly warm, but it was clean and clear, refreshing.  The dry sand sparkled white and the wet sand was soft gold, silky and fine.  Gulls cried, their voices carried across the beach by the breeze, breaking sharply in my ear.  Waves rolled, the low, melodious hiss of the surf soothed the birds’ shrill shrieks.

I was perhaps one and ten years.  By my mother’s accounts, I was a handsome boy.  She loved to run her fingers though my wavy blond hair and tousle it gently.  My skin was barely three shades lighter than honey, but still fair and unmarked.  However, what people first noticed were my eyes.  Large and uncannily bright, they were the deep blue of a summer ocean.

I had just scooped up a handful of sand when a shadow fell over my head.  Annoyed that this new obstacle was blocking the sun’s warmth, I looked up.

Probably appearing rather ridiculous, I shielded my eyes with one sandy arm and squinted, opening my mouth and cocking my head to the left.  What I saw slackened my jaw and made my arm drop like a stone.

A girl about my age stood in front of me.  The waves tugged at her long, pale pink dress, twisting it around her ankles, bits of white foam caught in the hem.  Long dark hair, locks of chestnut laced with amber, danced around a heart-shaped face.  Her magnolia white skin held the faintest flush across her cheekbones.  Lips, the dewy fresh color of roses, slightly parted, revealed pearly white teeth.  Luminescent eyes started down at me.  The incredible green of gemstones, they reminded me of my mother’s emeralds or the exotic lumps of jade she kept locked in a special velvet box.  Dark, curling lashes ringed the eyes and cast shadows down on her face like the silhouette of delicate black lace.

She knelt before me and sat with a grace I hadn’t thought a girl her age capable of.

“May I join you?” She asked, her voice soft and clear as a crystal bell.

Worst Person #13-Jeff Lurie

Ya, ok another one about the Eagles. I bet you guys are starting to wonder why I even like this team. I can’t help it. Eagles till the day I die. But man, this just gets frustrating.

Since Steve Spagnuolo was fired from his job as the Rams head coach a few weeks ago, Eagles fans young and old were waiting to hear if he would be hired by the Philadelphia Eagles to coach the defense. However, last night, these same fans came across some very sad news pertaining to the highly popular coach.

Steve Spagnuolo signed a deal with the Saints.

Then why, might you ask, do I blame the Eagles’ owner?

Maybe because he had the power to stop this from happening!

Not only did the Eagles not get Spags (which I thought was wishful thinking from the start) BUT JUAN CASTILLO STILL HAS A FRICKIN’ JOB!!!!

I don’t get how that’s possible. He’s the worst coordinator the Eagles have had since long before Jim Johnson. I don’t know why this team continues to screw their fans. We just want to win a Super Bowl. Is that so much to ask?

I’ve seen them win a division. I’ve seen them win a conference championship. But I have yet to see them win a Super Bowl. I saw them lose one. And I’ll be honest, my story isn’t even the saddest one. My father was born in 1962. He hasn’t seen the Eagles win anything. The last time the Eagles won a league championship was in 1960, before the Super Bowl was born and before my dad was born. My dad will be 50 years old in October, and they still have no championships to show for 46 years of the Super Bowl.

WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE OUR TURN LURIE?!?!?!? SPAGNUOLO COULD HAVE HELPED US GET BACK ON TRACK! WHY DIDN’T YOU WANT TO PAY HIM?

There’s a long offseason to go. Alot of things can happen. But, I came up with a 6 step scheme that could win the Eagles a championship. FIRING CASTILLO WAS ONE OF THE STEPS!!! DON’T SCREW US LURIE!!!!

Taking things for granted

People take others for granted much too often in their lives.

I have been a culprit of it one too many times. And it is a hard thing to come to terms with.

I wish people would realize that there is no harm in telling someone you care each and every day, but there is more harm than imaginable in doing the exact opposite. There isn’t a time you will regret letting someone know that you appreciate them – no matter who they are to you – but there will always be a time you will regret holding your tongue when all you wanted was to let them know you cared.

It was your 21st birthday on Monday. And, even though I was not as close with you as some people were, I wish I could have wished you happy birthday, seen your smile, and spent a little time with you. I cared about you. You were important to me. And I will regret not telling you that for the rest of my life because I will never have the chance to tell you that again.

Happy birthday, Mikey. I know that if you were here, you would take absolutely no person and nothing else for granted; you weren’t the kind to do that. And if I am to take just one thing from knowing you, I will take that.

I hope everything is going well in paradise. I think of you more than you know.

Joy of Joys

I find there to be nothing making my week slightly positive besides the fact that the Republican party is a mess. Some may shame me for finding joy in others misery, but to them I would respond with words not suitable for this site.

For those of you who prefer to not follow the Republican race, here is some news. Mitt Romney, the only feasible candidate now that Huntsman dropped out, just made a little confession. He admitted that he only pays about 15% on his taxes.

Mitt Romney is not one of those poor candidates either. This guy is loaded, so rich that he should just start wearing suits made out of money to the debates. So why then, Mr. Romney, are you paying only 15% while Americans that make about one millionth of what you make pay twice that rate?

His answer: because I am not making much income. He babbled about his only job being speaker positions (which he gets about $40k and hour for) and how he hasn’t been fully working for a while now. But he is still making enough to buy a small country each year.

Mitt Romney is a scumbag for a variety of reasons but this just adds on to it. Obviously our system is partially to blame for this rat to be able to sneak his way around tax codes, but being a public servant (if he was my servant he would be whipped daily) he should know better.

And if you thought that is not a big deal, one of Romney’s huge corporations (who are people too) seems to be keeping their funds (which are linked very closely with Romney) in the Cayman Islands to avoid taxes. Damn, isn’t he just an outstanding citizen?

But while many people are up in arms about all of this, I feel no need to be. As much as I would love to see Romney be publicly humiliated by a variety of public displays, I am content with the chances of him being elected president going down. At this point all I want to see is Obama being sworn in so that we can decline more slowly into our final years as a great nation instead of being thrown into a third world plutocracy by good ol’ Mitt.

RIP Reason

I knew Jon Huntsman was not going to win the Republican nomination. But I still could not help but be a little sad when he dropped out of the race.

My friends and family know me as the Republican basher, that guy who always says the obnoxious and inflammatory comments about the Good Ol’ Party.

But Jon Huntsman was different, he actually was intelligent and reasonable. Now the GOP has members who are very intelligent, take Dick Cheney for example. But Dick makes Stalin look like a teddy bear. I’m sure the GOP has had reasonable members who were unintelligent too, I just can’t think of any.

But Huntsman checked both boxes. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Huntsman explained that his reason for being part of the Republican party was just because he though the people of Utah (his state) would be the most open to it.

I’m not trying to claim him as a Democrat because he is not. There is probably some obscure party in Australia that his ideals fit perfectly in to, but because of our system, he has an R next to his name.

But he did not let that get in the way of trying to make sense. He was not like Romney, trying to make himself look like a crazy teabagger who just wants to get rid of every single government program and become an isolationist nation that is at war with every single Islamic state.

No, he supported socialized programs and tax hikes. He thought we should stop fighting people for no apparent reason and we should protect the environment. He also thought we should work to cut some redundant government programs and reduce big government and that Boehner is at least some what competent.

It says a lot that a man who just stuck by his beliefs seemed to be such an oddity. Our system has come to the point that someone in the middle, who works to bridge the two parties, is looked at as being ineffective and plain wrong.

It is sad that Huntsman could not gain more ground in the primaries but I hope that he changed a few peoples mind in the process. I hope that he made some people see that there is room for the middle, that reason can conquer our stupid polarization. Jon Huntsman gave me hope, and that is more than can be said for most candidates.

So I’m now switching to endorsing this man for the Republican nomination, and yes, that is a boot on his head. Free Ponies for All!

New Years Resolutions

happy new years

On New Year‘s night I took a moment to come up with some good resolutions that I believe will improve my life. For once I want to live up to the resolutions that I decide to make.

For the year of 2012 the first thing I would like to do is develop a more effective way of saving money. I feel that this is a very important element to growing up as well as a good skill to possess as I head into college.

Secondly I would like to start to improve my health. The main things to improve it would definitely be eating healthier foods as well as exercising more often and at a higher rate.health and fitness

For my third and final resolution, I would like to enjoy the rest of my senior year at OVS with the girl who matters the most to me as well as with some of the greatest friends anyone could ever ask for or hope for, cough cough** Evan Cooper! then I would like to enjoy my upcoming summer, and take advantage of every opportunity presented to me for the rest of the year.

Happy 2012 everyone!
2012
LETS MAKE IT A GREAT YEAR!!!

Athletes I Call Family

Much like the majority of sports, they are most fun to watch when they are  being done by those who are good at the sport. And as a photographer, it is way more fun to take pictures of them.

I am blessed with family and friends who are more than just good at the sports they make a part of their lives.

My little sister Chloe is one of the most amazing gymnasts that I have ever laid eyes on. She is 12 years old and is the gymnast who represents Baja California at the Gymnastics Nationals and last year’s first place national champion on beam, second place national champion on floor and third place national champion overall.
This is her below:

My friend Stosh is an amazing surfer who has won many surf competitions and is a well-known surfer in mexico. I have taken photos of him for years and have managed to get photos published on surf magazines. This is him below:

My best friend Angel Carreon is not a professional skater or a majorly well-known person but my god is he a great skate boarder. I have taken pictures of him skating for many years as well but the difference is that he doesn’t have the tittle attached to his name. I absolutely admire him as a person as well as a skater because he always manages get back on his feet and never complain.

This is him below:

Whats your sport?

Let’s Pause and Reflect

After the Divisional Playoff games this past weekend, I am left speechless. I know I constantly preach that anything can happen in the NFL. After this weekend, once again, I was right.

Well, not about all the games. I was 2/4 this weekend, and considering the miracles that took place, I cannot be blamed. The unpredictable has once again unfolded. Let’s discuss the craziness of the Divisional Playoffs. Ya, it’s about to get crazy.

Let’s start with the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers.

Easily the best game of the weekend, the Saints and ‘9ers engaged in a battle of sheer firepower. With the exception of the first quarter, the game quickly evolved into a “Game of the Year” candidate.

I was jumping out of my seat during every single play. I would have never predicted the 49ers to be in this position at the beginning of the season.

If Jim Harbaugh doesn’t win Coach of the Year, I don’t know who else could win. Harbaugh has taken full control of San Francisco, and has evolved them into a solid football team.

The rushing touchdown by Alex Smith and pass from Smith to Vernon Davis in the last 9 seconds provided excitement until the clock hit zero.

I loved everything about this game. Even though I predicted the Saints to emerge victorious, I commend the 49ers for their success.

The truth behind College Life

This past weekend my good friend visited me from College.  He is at UCLA, studying world art and culture, or basically blowing through freshmen year pretending to be a dancer.

He did though have some of the best war stories I have ever heard.  Being a Pledge for the Sigma Nu Fraternity.

So this blog is a shout out for my buddy who is experiencing hell on earth being a pledge.

Good luck. We are all rooting for you.

Before he visited I thought that all the crazy fraternity related tasks and events were just myths and only showed up in movies, but boy was I mistaken. After listening to my friend recount his horror experiences I could not help but cringe.

Thankfully now, he is past pledging and has become an active brother of Sigma nu.

What’s Left Of Us…?

Yesterday, a fascinating idea struck me as I ate breakfast in the cafeteria. As I was looking at the various awards in the display case (that will be handed out the day before GRADUATION), my eyes fell upon one award in particular. It is indeed, in my eyes, the ugliest award: a rock glued onto a metal platform.

But it made me think. And I talked to (thebrownguy) about this and I wanted to share this thought with you. I am curious to know what you feel.

What would happen if the world ended now?

If all that was left of us was dust and scraps and rocks attached to metal platforms, what would later civilizations think? Would they see our accomplishments? The progression we have made? The technological breakthroughs, the scientific knowledge, the intellectual beings we came to be?

Or would they see an obvious path to self-destruction? Would they see a failure to come together, an overuse of natural supplies, greed, ignorance, pride? Would they find a fallen people?

I don’ t know. I think it is a little bit of both. Maybe one more than the other.

First off, everything on the internet would be negligible to later civilizations because there will be no electricity or MacBook to bring it to life. Which again, I hold ambivalent opinions on because it nullifies a lot of academia and creativity our society holds. Beautiful bits of knowledge that are held in educational websites, news, recipes, photography, or even blogs such as the OVS Journalism Blog will be gone. However, I would be relieved because of all the negatives the cyber world has brought us. Such as bullying. Or self-image issues. The tabloids. Peer pressures and social standards.

Most of what knowledge we hold will be represented by print. And with the newspaper industry slowly falling apart due to our society’s thirst for instantaneous news reports, what we leave behind in print will be very little. Kindles and Nooks will mean nothing with a dead battery. But with what little we have, I believe we can draw inspiration and perhaps a chance for change.

And our carbon footprint. The huge problem that most people fail to see or don’t care to fix. We cannot come together to solve such a simple problem. And the ramifications of our indulgent lifestyles will be shown in our oceans and the weather. It will be proven in the industrialization and in the air. The later civilizations will see how wasteful we were. Hopefully, these people will also take the initiative to learn from our mistakes and live with a more sustainable, eco-friendly initiative.

However, more importantly, it made me think about what I have done in my life and what I can do to make a change. It made me realize how I could start with myself to make the world a better place, as cliche as that sounds. As for me, I am going to college in mere months and I believe that, with the willpower, I can do something.

Now the question I want to ask is: What will you leave behind?
