Golf Practice

My golf game is in a perpetual cycle of shit. I haven’t had a great round in over a year, there is always something going wrong. When I am hitting fairways I am not hitting greens. When I am hitting greens and putting well I am missing fairways. When I am chipping and putting well I am hitting snap hook hosel rockets straight into the ground. Nothing ever goes right.

My driver must live in a state of constant fear due to the amount I fucking throw it. I am in a consistently unhappy angry mood on the golf course. Everything is too complicated, grips, swing length, swing plane, swing tempo, shot aim, wind, and lie all factor into one shot. I have decided to simplify the game.

Every golf practice since I have made the change, I begin by hitting 9 chip shots, iron shots for accuracy, iron shots for tempo, then woods and drivers for accuracy, then I finish with 30 minutes of gate putting to drill in my stroke and tempo. I also need to be sure to not overcomplicate swing changes, instead, I need to implement more subtle changes.

I have decided to really buckle down and focus on playing as well as I can and this practice regiment is hopefully what gets me there.

Volleyball

So we started boys volleyball recently. It first boys team at the school in like 20 years which is pretty cool. But honestly, I’m loving it. It’s so fun like genuinely and the games just don’t seem long enough. I’m a starter too which is really cool. We had two games this week, one against SCVI and one against Pilgrim school. We beat SCVI which is pretty cool because I don’t think we were really expecting to. But we played Pilgrim today and we definitely knew we would lose but we put up a good fight. It was honestly some of the best volleyball we’ve played ever. Which I guess isn’t saying a whole lot seeing as we’ve only been playing for a couple weeks but that’s beside the point. I got home and took my shoes off and my toes are literally bleeding from playing, that’s how hard we were trying. Pilgrim was definitely the better team though, but they have had a boys team for a long time. We genuinely were improving as we played the game and it was frickin awesome. We have two more games next week and I can’t wait to see how we do.

Why I Personally Enjoy Anime

For many people anime is one of the genres of tv that they enjoy watching on a regular basis. For me, it’s the same, but I specifically like anime for the amount of variation of shows that are available to watch. For example, you could want to watch a sporty kind of show and throw on some Haikyu, an anime about volleyball and the main character’s struggles with succeeding. But if you aren’t feeling that and you want something more fantasy or like magic you could put on something like Konosuba or The Worlds Finest Assasin. These two take place in a world where the main character is reborn and has a goal to achieve that was set by a goddess at the beginning of the show. But hey maybe you prefer more romantic-type stuff and want to watch a heartwarming love story. If so then Toradora, A Silent Voice, or Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop are your thing, all are different takes on ways that love can come to be. For example, A Silent Voice is about a deaf girl that is bullied, and eventually, her bully falls in love with her when she gets older. Well if that’s not your vibe right now and you want to watch a dystopian future show then Sabuki Bisco or A Certain Magical Index are my two top picks. Sabuki Bisco is set in a world where a disease called Rust is running rampant with no cure. There is a group of people that use chemicals to grow mushrooms that can cure the rust but people think that they are terrorists because the mushrooms destroy stuff. Finally, if you are in the mood for blood and gore or horror then High Rise Invasion, Corpse Party, and The Future Diary are my picks for you. High Rise Invasion is about a world that was created to decide the next god amongst the people put in the world. There are people with masks that attempt to drive the people without masks to suicide by jumping off the highrises. All of these are examples of why I like anime, and that is the freedom to watch what I want when I want to and for there to always be something that will fit the genre I feel like watching.

Poem

I’m alone in the dark

Scared of the ocean because of shark(s)

I have a dog, she goes “bark”

I’m walking my dog, gotta embark

In school my friends said I was a narc

Fireworks; spark

Traveling international, Denmark

My teachers yell at me because of my remark(s)

I walk my dog in the park

I know a kid named Mark

After this I’m starting my villain arc

Updated a what’s in my gym bag?

My Bag:

My bag is simple black and white Nike duffel bag. There is nothing crazy special about it, my duffy is just bag that I’m constantly in. It has one big compartment with a mini interior pocket and a mesh pocket on the outside.

Accessories

Mentos gum:

I chew gum while lifting. Chewing gum is an essential for my lifts, I prefer Mentos brand gum because the favor is immaculate and lasts for along time. Chewing gum helps me focus and stay locked in.

pc: amazon.com

Chapstick:

A chapstick-stick is an important item in my gym bag. I hate having chapped lips and especially in the gym so I’ll always apply a layer of chapstick prior to my lift.

Supplements:

Pre-workout:

I use Legion Pulse pre-workout and love it. This pre-workout has few ingredients and has a relatively balanced caffeine level. Legion Pulse is a pre-workout that does drag me through my workout, rather it gives me a little extra push through my lift.

pc: stack3d.com

Creatine:

I take Legion Recharge as my creatine supplement. Not too much to say about it, I take a scoop of it on a daily basis.

pc: amazon.com

Equipment:

Lifting Belt:

I use an all-black Gym Reapers belt. No complaints, it gets the job done. I wear it mostly during squats but will throw it on during deadlifts or if I do heavy barbell rows.

vc: me

Wrist wraps:

I rock the Ethos 18″ wrist wraps. I only use them on certain lifts like dumbbell bench press, dumbbell incline press, and dumbbell shoulder press. They provide stability and support in both my hands and wrists/arms.

pc: dickssportinggoods.com

Wrist Straps:

A recent addition to my gym bag that I absolutely love is my Gym Reapers wrist straps. I use these almost every day in the gym whether it’s for the upper body or legs I’ll use these straps daily.

Knee wraps:

The newest addition to my gym bag is my Gym Reapers knee wraps. I’ve only used these a couple times, I only use these when I squat heavy or if I load up plates on the leg press machine. These knee wraps provide security and safety to my knees and surrounding ligaments when doing a heavy exercise.

Additional stuff:

Some other not-so-important items in my bag are resistance bands, cash, a water bottle, and a shaker bottle. These are all items I use but not as frequently as the items listed above.

Shredding the Absolute Gnar

This last weekend I went on a school trip to Mammoth Mountain, and I am learning to snowboard. On the first day of the trip, I did some pretty basic tricks and went on many runs including many greens and blues. The next day, I went to shred the park and learn how to do a couple of new tricks on a snowboard.

credit: Me

The first video was my third attempt at hitting a cannon. A cannon is a large cylinder that is slid on and can be done sideways or straight on. I opted for hitting it straight on as it is much easier than hitting it sideways or in a boardslide. Doing a cannon looks really easy and the only hard part of riding on the cannon is getting on it because some of them have a small gap in between the cannon and the jump onto it.

Credit: Me

The second video was a different cannon in the park that I hit after feeling much more comfortable on the cannons and my snowboard. I hit this obstacle with a little more speed and from a different angle than the previous cannon.

Not every trick is a success at first and sometimes you fall, I’m planning on going back and destroying the rail. During spring break, I am going back up to June Mountain and my plan is to go to the park and destroy all the obstacles. I also might be getting my own snowboard soon, I am thinking about getting a Yes. board or a Signal board.

I want a Board with a mix of park and all-mountain potential because I really enjoy hitting rails and then taking a break and going to some powder and hitting some groomers.

You Are a Dog Racist

If you know me personally, you probably know that I love dogs. I have a powerful affinity for dog breeds that have had tarnished histories or bad reputations because of dogfighting and generally poor owners. As a kid, my dog was pretty ambiguous, but it was pretty clear he was either American Bulldog or Pitbull, and so was his brother. The dog that we take care of for about a month each year is also a pitbull-boxer mix. Similarly, my family and those around me have also had quite a few Pitbulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and other ‘dAnGeRoUs’ dog breeds. Through all this experience, I have not met a single one of these dogs that were aggressive even in the slightest. In fact, the most aggressive dogs I have met have been breeds that are usually considered well-mannered.

However, despite having such a wide range of great experiences with dogs of these breeds, I have met an abundance of people that are either scared of these breeds or dislike them because they believe they are dangerous. Usually, it’s some story about how they were kids and got barked at or nipped at, or even bit by a dog of said breed. To me, this literally just sounds like racism. When someone comes out with their excuse for why they dislike a particular breed, it’s usually worded exactly the same as when a racist says they don’t like a race of people. I mean, think about it, telling you like labs but not Pitbulls is not that far from saying you like one race of people and not the other. In terms of weight and general history, it’s not exactly the same, but in biological terms, it’s strikingly similar to racism. I’m not saying it’s ok to prefer a breed and look for one that you want, but having a pre-set prejudice against a dog breed is dog racism. Don’t be a dog racist.

Escaping the pit of despair

Seasonal depression is wild. I’m not a depressed person, don’t really have reason to be depressed, and have never been depressed, but this winter I was feeling kinda sad I’m not even gonna front. Since the start of December, I had a fog hanging over me. I lost my drive to seek new relationships and became content with what I had, which was a good thing in some aspects, but I was incredibly unmotivated. I was bogged down by hours of college work, AP classes, soccer practices, and late nights during the school week. On the weekend, I would drive down to LA and it would feel like I had to choose between my family and friends when spending time with people. I was in the pit of despair.

All of the sudden, I have snapped out of it. I have moved past soccer, college apps, and have embraced senioritis. This has given me time to meditate during the school week and afforded me much more clarity. I have also started sleeping in LA on Sunday nights, which gives me more time to balance hanging with family and friends. Also, my convertible whose clutch I totally melted a month ago is back from the shop so I can take friends out in it. ALSO, I have a new friend who is the perfect candidate for a cruise in the Boxster.

Everything is coming up, Alden. I don’t know how things just magically turned around, but I’m here to ride out this wave of good energy.

A Eulogy for My Mother

For nearly the whole of my life, when I realized it and when I didn’t, I was witness to a great love story.

In that story, my mother was fixed solidly at center stage. Her partner of nearly seven decades played an important role, and in the final years of her life he played THE most important role. Her sons and their wives, and their children and their grandchildren, also played key parts. But make no mistake, mom was the star of this story, THE central character in a narrative that spanned time and generations, and exemplified sacrifice and suffering, laughter and joy and the blessings that come from loving and being loved.

And love she did. She loved gently and quietly. She loved honestly and sometimes urgently. She loved us when we deserved it, and, certainly in my case, even when we thought we didn’t. Here’s the simplest of truths: for those of us gathered here today, she was our sun, and we, for all these years, were the lucky few, privileged to be able to warm ourselves in her light.

Each of us has his or her own stories to tell about our time in that light, and I’ve obviously been thinking about that quite a bit these past few weeks. Here’s my take: my mother was my champion and my guide, my caretaker and defender, THE person primarily responsible for the arc and trajectory of my life.

On her watch I learned to read and spell and escape, without judgment, into a complex of imaginary worlds, each of which enriched my childhood and expanded my possibilities. She followed me to grade school, keeping close watch over me in her work as a teacher’s aid. My brothers will say that as the youngest, the baby in the family, this proves that I was spoiled, and there is no doubt they are right.

When in second grade I came home embarrassed because I was the only one in class who couldn’t tell time, my mom sat me down and taught me how to do so overnight. In fourth grade, when I joined the school chorus and then wanted to quit when no other boys joined, my mom forced me to stick with it, telling me that in this family we finish what we start.

Some who didn’t know her well might think her meek, but I actually feel sorry for the assistant high school principal who in my freshman year wanted to keep me in bonehead math instead of Algebra I. He changed his tune once my mom marched into his office and demanded a change be made. That single act, perhaps more than any other, launched me into college and then into the careers that I grew to love, and that to this day define me in the most fundamental ways. Think my mother meek? I pity anyone who ever tried taking her purse from her – she held onto that thing like an NFL running back hugging a football on a touchdown drive in the Superbowl.

She would have loved that the Rams won the Superbowl. She would have loved that people wore red in her honor today. She would have loved that her family came together on this day, and that it was because of her they did so, though if we had truly been listening to her most of us would have been late to this service as we were constantly warned NOT to drive over 55 mph.

That’s my mom, and she belongs to me, and to all us of here, in deep, resonating memory. And with that being true, I can’t even imagine what those memories are like for my dad, who met his teenage sweetheart on a February day at the fair, and who married her two Februarys later, and who made a life with her, and children with her, and in the end tied her shoes and combed her hair and cooked for her and cared for her every need, and made sure – in fact, made it his life’s work – that she lived out every one of her days, up to her last, in the home that she loved.

I told you it was a great love story, and this one ends, as all love stories must, with tears and reluctant goodbyes. Without Josephine, Vincent, and the rest of us, are simply trying to figure out what to do next, and what’s hardest about that is that the things that make us so sad these days are all the things my mom loved so much, simple things that are important to hold onto, the things that even in these heart-wrenching times will help keep us afloat.

Wind chimes and prickly cactus and wild birds. Lighted gardens and golden sunsets and Little League World Series baseball. The rustic tales of Little House on the Prairie and the challenges of Word Search Puzzles and the crazy rollercoaster love stories that fuel Telenovelas. The aroma of candles and the staccato rhythm of Rancheras and the silliness and laughter that pour out of those she loved.

These words are in memory of my mother, who from this day forward will live through us all. These words are in honor of my mother who has always held us together, and who always will.

Isekai Anime That I Recommend

Anime is something that represents all walks of life, from sports players to everyday salarymen, everybody has some representation in this animated world. This connection that people can make to the characters in the anime allows for a deeper viewing experience. One genre of anime known as Isekai follows a normal everyday person as they are transported into fantasy worlds with magic and magical beasts. This list will be my top 3 Isekai anime that I think everybody should watch.

Mushoku Tensei

(Picture not included because WordPress sucks)

This anime follows a shut-in boy to a new world where he is proficient in magic. This visually stunning and comedy-packed show is meant for a viewer that can resonate with the immaturity shown as well as more serious realizations that were made by the characters. This show seems to go deeper into the psychology of the protagonist Rudeus Greyrat than other Isekai’s I have watched. This interesting aspect of the show as well as the complex world and characters that are introduced create a fantastic anime, worthy of my #1 ranking for animes made in 2021.

9.3/10

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

The classic Isekai anime usually shows a character or a few characters transported to another world with their newfound talents and special affinities; Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is different. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash takes a new and unique view on the anime, with the characters facing a world of magic and monsters with a realistic sense of fear and gore. The characters in this show all wake up in a haze and are asked to join the Reverse Army, where they kill monsters and get paid. The strongest people all team up together leaving several weak and fearful men and women to make a lousy team. This team does their best to persevere in such an unforgiving world, and this unique perspective of the Isekai makes it especially intriguing. (Also most definitely not a children’s show due to the gore … and the sexual implications)

8.7/10

The Rising of the Shield Hero

The Rising of the Shield Hero is another excellent anime, falling into a similar category of Isekai as Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. This show also takes a unique perspective of the Isekai genre where (without giving too much away) the protagonist of the show is scapegoated in a community he was summoned into supposedly as a “Hero.” This show attempts to teach a lesson to the viewer, to never give up, especially in the face of adversity. The main hero of the show has nothing to keep him going, so he relies on the power of spite to fuel himself. This oppressed man wants to prove that he is the strongest and most useful hero to spite those who deceived him into a downfall of public standing. This interesting mindset allows the hero to cut corners in some areas where others that call themselves heroes would have to tread lightly. The Rising of the Shield Hero is an incredibly unique anime that is sure to entertain most viewers.
