Skinny V. Fat

Being skinny isn’t fun.

Everyone always makes some stupid comment about me eating more. Oh right. Because I’m skinny means that  I hate food. It’s not that I hate food, it’s just that I like food to be good. I’m not like all of you food obsessed fattys who need to eat a twinkie in between their snacks or else they’ll pass out.

The odd thing about it is that I always get called skinny by really fat people. My old dentist used to always tell me to eat more. “Forget you fatty!” I wanted to say. “Hows about you lay off the Hostess cupcakes, then tell we can talk.”

I think it’s some kind of weird vendetta fat people have against  us skinny people.  Like they need to point out that we are skinny, to make themselves feel ok.

I tell you, if I were to call every fat person I see fat, then I would be the bad one. I think I’ll try that. Every time some overweight know-it-all tells me to eat more, i’ll tell him to eat less. We’ll see how that works.

I would say that as a whole skinny people have to deal with more crap that fat people. Only because it’s socially acceptable to make fun of a skinny person, and not a fat person. Maybe that’s because 62% of all American adults are overweight or obese.

I would much rather be skinny than fat. I haven’t seen many skinny people dying of heart attacks or such things. Skinny people have it good. We save money on food, we have more room on airplanes and we don’t have to squeeze through doorways.

Words

I always thought of my cousin (Let’s call her Cousin for the sake of her privacy) as a small, slightly pudgy girl with a big smile. She always trailed behind my eleven other cousins, my big brother, and me while we played games, and she always seemed to happy just to sit and talk with us.

I was once told that while she was in fourth or fifth grade, her mother found her in the bathtub with her legs completely hairless. Very confused, her mother inquired about it, and Cousin explained how girls in her class called her legs hairy and gross, so she shaved the hair off.

That was the time that we should’ve started keeping a closer eye on her.

I had heard over the years that my aunt and uncle were worrying about Cousin and peer pressure issues. They were mainly concerned about her eating habits. They thought that maybe girls were calling her fat and she was reacting the same way she did when they told her she had hairy legs.

But when I saw her two years ago, it was not what I expected. The girl I once thought to be radiant and albeit a little pudgy, was nothing more than a shell of a person. Her feet were pressed against each other, as were her knobby knees, but her legs touched in no places. Her shirt rested a bit high above her jeans, her hip bones jutting painfully out and her stomach fat nonexistent. With her back turned to you, you could practically count her ribs and her arms looked no more than toothpicks. Her collar bones stuck out like mountains from her chest and her neck looked to thin to hold her head up. She wore makeup and looked as though she thought the world of herself. Cousin was in sixth grade.

It made me angry. Oh, it made me so angry to see her this way. I wanted to yell at her, shake sense into her feeble little body and watch her as she ate every last thing on a plate piled a mile high. But I sat back and watched as she and her equally skinny friend shared a kids meal, but barely touching the plate at all.

While in the car back to the hotel they were staying at, I casually mentioned how if you stopped eating you would gain water weight as your body tried to counter it’s lack of nutrients and eventually your stomach would start to eat itself. They looked appalled, but recent photos show no difference in her ghastly appearance.

I just want her to go back to the way she was before. I just want her to be happy.
I just want her to live again.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will hurt forever.

“Eat Less?” Government Says “Yes, Please.”

I have heard of the unfortunate “Freshman 15” as well as the foreigners exclamation of “Oh yes, America has so many McDonald’s!”

However, I realized, as a citizen of America, I have never actually stopped and thought about the health of our nation, or even the health of our local cities.

Recently, as the nation has simply continued in its state of obesity, federal regulators have felt the need to give citizens more advice. “Drink water instead of sugary drinks like soda, fill your plate with fruits and vegetables and cut down on processed foods filled with sodium, fat or sugar.”

Simple rules, but yet a large portion of America’s citizens are facing diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

And don’t get me wrong, I say this with no judgement. I can completely understand one’s love to eat, especially when it comes to consuming sugary substances.

However, it seems that the government itself has issued their own statement. A new declaration that many believe will lead to less health problems and a lower rate of obesity.

“Enjoy your food, but eat less.”

Although this statement may seem obvious and mundane, “facts are facts.”

Americans today consume high over the accepted amount of calories, which then result in expanding waistlines and negative health effects.

“For them to have said ‘eat less’ is really new. Who would have thought?” said the director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Margo G. Wootan. “We should have been saying ‘eat less’ for a decade.”

Ms. Wootan continued to state her happiness in the clearness of these newfound guidelines. She believes that before, adding fruits and vegetables to one’s diet could have easily constituted for adding “a slice of tomato to your hamburger.”

Inhaleable Food!

Yeah, that’s not a play on words or a metaphor or whatever. It’s true! You don’t have to chew or swallow. All you have to do is breathe. How funky is that? This futuristically flabbergasting contraption is properly named Le Whaf because that is precisely how it works. You “whaf” up the vaporized food products and then you’re done. Seriously, that’s it! Astronaut food much? I mean we are literally reaching the space age or alien era or robotic future or whatever you want to call it. First they build a hotel in space, then they make a car that drives itself and now we can breathe food. What next, virtual classrooms? Oh wait, I’m pretty sure they already have those. Who knows! We’ve advanced so much it’s hard to keep track. Oh and for those girls that are “watching their figure” there are hardly any calories (*said with a heavy Valley Girl accent*)!

5 Chinese Dining Habits

There are many myth and superstitions in Chinese culture, even in their eating habits. Here are five major superstitions in Chinese eating habits.null

The first one is never rest chopsticks vertically in the rice. Because it looks like an incense which represents someone’s death. Second, do not turn over the fish. Turning over the fish looks like you are turning over a boat. And this boat carries all your good luck and fortune. So if you flip the fish over, it symbolizes that you are throwing all the luck and fortune away.null Third, when you are eating the noodles, don’t cut off the noodles. Because the length of the noodles represents the longevity of your life. So if you cut off the noodles, it means that you are shortened your own life.null

Fourth, never let your tea cup run dry. If your tea cup is dry, that means that there is nothing left in your life, so at least there should be something in your tea cup and it should be refilled immediately. Fifth, always order an even number of dishes. Odd number of dishes represents death, because during a funeral meal, people usually order an odd number of dishes. So next time, when you eat dinner with some Chinese people, you better watch out for these table manners!

Meat.

It all started with Upton Sinclair‘s “The Jungle.” This book showed how cramped and dirty meat stockyards were in the US. Food sanitation, and more importantly, food safety, has been a big concern of many people in America.

Even today, the agricultural business has a very bad rap. The cows, chickens and other animals used for food are treated horribly. The animals are put in cages that do not allow them to move. They are forced fed food to become as fat as possible. They know nothing about being outside or being able to run, or even walk. When they are good and plump, they are slaughtered for food.Old Chicago stockyards

As sad as all of this is, there still is some hope. The senate just passed a new bill that increases food safety regulations. This is the first change in food saftey laws in a very long time. The bill was passed by a vote of 73 to 25.

The Full English.

It’s a Sunday morning. As the suns rays enlighten your bed, you realize it’s about time to get up. The fact that there are no worries because it’s a Sunday makes you feel blissfully happy, nothing could make this day any better. Oh you’ve spoken to soon. Slipping out of your bed you are enlightened by the sweet, smoky scent of bacon wafting through the door. Moving into the kitchen you see a ravishing ensemble consisting of: bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, toast, mushrooms, hash browns and some simple grilled tomato. Delicious, a gastronomical extravagance.

The Full English is a dish that is traditionally English. Mainly eaten at weekends as a treat it has now found its way worldwide due to its great excellence. Many places have even taken up the tradition of serving it all day, as the demand for a cooked breakfast is extremely high.

“What’s Eating You?”

There is a new television series on entitled “What’s Eating You?” The show airs on the E Entertainment Network weekly. The cast of the show consists of women struggling with eating disorders.

I feel that this show relays a very powerful and important message to our generation about health and fullness of life. It shows first hand, the effects that eating disorders which can be deadly.

The show also exposes the raw reality of the fashion and modeling businesses, and how corrupt they have become. It is one of the first programs that spills the secret truth about the fashion world and shatters the inaccurate perceptions that girls around the world dream up.

One of the cast members, Kiara Lomeli, said “I know I’m dying but I choose death on the skinny side not the fat side.”

My hope is that this television series takes advantage of its public influence, and shows how truly devastating and life threatening eating disorders are so that we can become more aware, and finally make some real changes so that we stop loosing so many beautiful girls to these deadly illnesses so frequently.

Nan’s Roast

Grandparents always provide great food. It is said that often they make the best meals. In my opinion my Nan definitely meets the specification of a brilliant cook. If you were ever to taste her roast dinner, I would say you would best describe it as food forged by the gods. Delicious.

So what defines the ultimate roast? There are three key features to the perfect roast dinner: roast potatoes, some sort of meat and the all-important gravy. Of course there are numerous extras, for example a medley of vegetables, but these three components are the main commodities. The combination of the gravy and “roasties” is simply divine. I’m stuffed to the brim yet writing this is still making my mouth water.

The roast is a typical English Dish and definitely one of the best. Traditionally eaten every Sunday it also makes a large debut on Christmas Day and Easter. If ever you were to come to England the Sunday roast is definitely a dish you need to try.

The typical roast :)
