The Valiance of Girls soccer

Today at OVS the girls soccer team had a game against Oak Grove.  First off I must say it was one of the most hard-fought games of all time.

The girls stepped onto the field with only 9 players; 10 is the minimum number to play. Another student who was just there to watch stepped up and decided to play. That was the first valiant move made of the day.

So with no subs and only 10 players the girls went out full force.  One of the opposing players was extremely vicious  and was fouling our players left and right, and even after she yelled and pushed one of the girls, the OVS players still fought on!

By the time the second half started the OVS spuds were exhausted, yet still they persisted and gave them hell.

All in all I feel that if the boys; team had the same heart as the girls, we would probably have gone to finals

Camping

I got back from the Ojai Valley School Outdoor Education trip (6 day camping) this past Friday. It was an interesting experience. I hiked up to Machu Pichu once, but the porters carried all my stuff so I hadn’t backpacked before.

We washed dishes with dirt, went to the bathroom in the wild, didn’t shower for 6 days…

But other than that, it was a fun trip. On the first day, we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Since I was walking with the marine science teacher, she answered every question I had, which made it more fun and interesting!

On the second day, we backpacked about six and a half miles with a 25- pound backpack on my back and the camping began. I had bruises on my shoulders and my back but I felt accomplished after it all.

We played card games, hiked a lot, and saw many amazing vistas, it was so inspirational.

This is the OVS outdoor education website. Camping pictures will be up soon so check them out ☺

Time

Sometimes, well actually most of the time I feel like I have absolutely no time to myself.  I go to school, and usually make it home by 6 30 after soccer practice and everything, then its dinner, shower and by the time that’s all done it can be as late as 8!

Next of course like a good student I spend time doing homework and when that’s all done its straight to bed, because the next morning I have to be up at 6 30.

Now obviously I am complaining, well that’s true, but I did choose to go to OVS and take AP classes, but that still doesn’t mean that I do not deserve some R and R.

Usually that’s what the weekends are for, but between family events and soccer games, those are gone too. Sometimes I really just feel like running into the woods to be completely alone for just a few hours!

The true meaning of the Game.

I have been playing soccer for almost my entire life now.  I really love the game and competing against other people.  I also love winning.  What I don’t love so much is losing.

Today we played the Dunn School soccer team and lost, but as I was driving home from the game, I realized that I was not upset at all. I actually had a smile on my face.

For the first time in over a decade of playing soccer I finally realized what it means to play the game.  Playing soccer is not about one team winning or anything, it’s about two teams going out on a field and playing their hearts out.  That’s what happened today.  It was by far the most fun game I have ever played.

I was constantly smiling and making jokes with opposing players, and when it came to one on one with the ball, the competition was always in good spirits.  Both teams played extremely well and there was a true sense of healthy competition.

Before today I never understood why in professional leagues players from opposite teams would talk to each other and joke. To me the other team was always the enemy and there should be no fraternization.  But once again today’s game brought down my preconceived notions of camaraderie and I did speak with players after the game.

Overall although we lost, I myself, and I think the team as a whole, learned more today then we have all season, and from here on OVS will see a different team.

Let The Stress Begin!

As the week comes to an end and the weekend begins I am feeling more and more stressed out. I feel like I’m in a big way psyching my self out way more than is necessary but regardless, it sucks.

I really want to do well on my finals, more than ever before. I want to make my mom proud and my teachers proud but even more so my self proud. I am beyond sick of disappointing my mom and my teachers, I just want them to be happy for me and say good job instead of what I’ve always heard which is “you could do better” or “you need to do better” dissapointed

I want to be able to walk away from a final with a smile on my face and knowing that I did well, it’s horrible to walk away and know that you got a bad grade. F

One day I want to feel what it feels like to get an “A” on a final, and no Spanish class didn’t count.

Lets see if I can make it happen this time.

Hopefully this won’t happen!

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FINALS EVERYONE!!!!

Hello OVS!

As you may know or recognize, this is Emma from last years graduating class and I’ve stopped by to say hello! It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve read this blog so I’ve spent the last half hour or so catching up on you journalists. I must say that half of you write better than I did before taking the course and there’s still half a year left for you all to improve! But seriously, enjoy that class while you can. It was definitely one of my favorite classes of all time while at OVS. Maddie and I have been working on a video, which we actually started months ago but never seem to find time for, that should be uploaded and posted sometime before Christmas. You’ll hear from us soon enough.

P.s. Give my regards to Mrs. Whipple and Terry Wilson. I miss them dearly!

P.s. 2 I miss your parking Mr. A

Crazy Beginning to a probably crazy week

Death and funerals are crazy. I’ve never been a fan of death, but sometimes that just kinda happens. That is what happened last night to a fallen Olivo. John Olivo Sr., my grandfather, passed away. It was a long time coming and I will be returning to Hammonton, New Jersey following the OVS boys football game against Laguna. It is a sad time, but a time where I will be able to go back to my home state and enjoy time with my family in our time of mourning.

It really Hurts?

Today I played my very first ever football game against the Dunn school.  I have practiced about twenty days and was in pads for about 18 of those.  All I can say is the game is much different then practice.

Being completely new to the game meant I had to learn everything, and with the goal of getting eligible for the game I focussed on one position, running back.

First I will say I really enjoy the game, but I’m still very lost.  I learned the hard way how it feels to be tackled and piled on by testosterone fuming teenagers.  To be perfectly honest, it’s not that bad.  Yeah it hurts but the pads do protect you and again and again I got up from being crushed by players. Saying that I think I ended up on the ground almost every play. I am not a great blocker so it ended with me or me and my “guy” on the ground, usually just me…over..and over…and over.. again.

What really hurts though is those precision hits. In the second quarter I got a helmet straight to the side of the knee.  I remember laying there looking up just thinking “Sweet Jesus, that really hurt”

So I walked away from the game with bruises, cuts, and possibly some internal bleeding (jokes)

But really, football hurts, but you gotta love the game.

OVS Cross Country!

The OVS cross country team ran its first meet this past Wednesday, October 5th, at the Thacher School against Thacher, Besant Hill, Dunn, Laguna Blanca, Cate and Midland. It was raining, but after 2:30 the sun came out and it was a perfect condition for running.

The girls’ race started at 3, from the track and boys’ at 3:30.

The Thacher School cross country course has a lot of little hills. However, compared to our Pi course, it should be a piece of cake. Personally, I don’t like down hill but I love up hill so their course wasn’t that bad.

The boys ran hard; it was fun cheering with my roommate 🙂 I’m proud of you guys!

For girls, we lack of one girl so we couldn’t compete as a team… But we all ran pretty well 🙂 It was such a fun meet!

BUT! Yesterday, this awesome girl came up to us and told us that she wants to join the cross country team! Which means, girls can compete as a team too! Most of the people here don’t like cross country running, I’m probably the only one who loves running to death, but I want to thank her for being brave!!! I know she will be an awesome runner!

Also, I would like to thank the faculty members, parents and two, sweet journalism
students, (even though they missed the race) who came to support us!

GO OVS CROSS COUNTRY!!! GO SPUDS!!!

OVS Football

Today, Saturday the 24th, was the first OVS football game.  Twenty plus guys and one girl went out and fought valiantly against East Valley.

It was quite a game, and more than a few times I found myself yelling and jumping up and down as OVS players ran the ball up and down the field.

It was quite a good turnout as well, with many OVS Upper students coming down as well as many Lower School students and faculty.  I came to the game with my dad and we brought our lunches, and had a nice afternoon watching testosterone brimming boys pummel each other.

In the end, though, the mighty Spuds were defeated.  There defeat was in no part a lack of heart or effort on the OVS team.  The sweat was visibly dripping down their faces and soaking their clothes yet they never relented.  The “OVS Champions” came out the second half and really stepped it up.  A real scramble at every play OVS made East valley work for every inch or ground gained.

As OVS is a very young  team, this was the first game for many player.  Even with the clear ‘green’ of the team, they did not lack heart what-so-ever.  Many of East Valley’s touchdowns were scored merely off of errors on OVS’ part that, with the continued diligence of coaching staff, will soon be corrected, and OVS football will be a force to be reckoned with.
