Chocolate

Mmm… Chocolate is one of my favorite sweets. Once I start eating it, I can’t help myself! I often hear that you can’t get mad having chocolate in your mouth!

In the U.S, Hershey’s, M&Ms, and Mars occupy 2/3 of the chocolate market and U.S consumes more chocolate than any other country and as you know, chocolate is popular all around the world, but not only in the U.S.

The world 5 biggest chocolate factories are…

1. Mars (U.S)
2. Cadbury(U.K)
3. Nestle(Switzerland)
4. Ferrero (Nutella) (Italy)
5. Hershey’s (U.S)

As you can see, major chocolate factories are located in Europe. I had a bite of Finnish chocolate today, “Karl Fazer” that I got from my Finnish friend Anni, it melted in my mouth and I thought that was the best chocolate I’ve ever had!

When you hear the word “chocolate”, you may instantly think that it makes you fat. However, the fact is that chocolate is very beneficial for your health. It lowers your blood pressure and is rich in antioxidants. 40g of chocolate contains about 400mg of it. Antioxidants are very good for you because they prevent protein, fat and DNA from oxidizing. If you lack antioxidants in your body, cells and DNA will be damaged by active oxygen, which makes higher the risk of getting cancer and cardiac disease.

So don’t feel guilty for having chocolate indulge yourself!

My first triathlon

At 6:45 AM on Sunday, 4 of the members of Tri Ojai and I were at the poolside area of the Ojai Valley School getting ready for a practice triathlon. It was very cold outside; everyone was wearing warm jackets and pants. I couldn’t believe that I had to swim in the outside pool… The athletic director was laughing at me shivering with cold and being afraid of swimming in the pool. MEANIE.

Brief course description: 500 yard swim (outdoor OVS pool), 11 mile bike (into the town of Ojai and back up to campus), and 3 mile run (on Pi, which is our home cross country course, BACKWARDS).

The practice race started at 7 AM. I jumped into the pool. My body was freezing and when I started swimming I couldn’t breathe and was just desperately trying to get some air. But after I swam 50 yards, my body got used to the temperature of the water, and I felt warm again.

I got out of the pool and rushed to the transition area to start biking. My body was shivering and wobbling. I got on the bike and it was all down hill for the first 3 or 4 miles. It was a bumpy road; my hands were hurting the whole time, because I had to squeeze the break in order not to crash. The hill on the way back up was a killer, but I liked it anyways. My 11-mile bike ride was quite a journey, but I had a lot of fun.

I set my bike on the rack and started to run. I couldn’t feel my feet at all, my legs felt all weird. I ran down the hill and the worst part started when I hit the bear gate. I ran uphill for 2 miles until I hit the boy’s dorm. But it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected and I liked the feeling of running down hill afterward.

I completed triathlon in 1 hour 19 minutes and 50 seconds. I loved it so much. I think I will get myself into triathlon! I asked my dad if I could get a road bike for Christmas! I would love to bike all winter just to take a break from running and not to burn myself out.

Anyways, I had fun and it was the best way to start my Sunday!

I would like to thank my triathlon coach for letting me have this opportunity.

Sickness Creates Problems

sick

I was majorly sick last week. I had a horrible cold and I could barely breathe. But from that point on Monday morning I knew things were going to escalate to a whole new level of problems. But this time they would involve schoolwork and the act of falling behind in school.

ddddd

I have spent this past weekend trying to catch up on all the assignments due and I am to the point where I am completely overwhelmed with work.

The feeling of not being able to finish every assignment that is due is one thing, but the feeling of not being able to finish every assignment that is due and every assignment that was due the past few days that you weren’t in school is horrible.

I bet that most people already know that missing school causes you to get behind in your classes, but for those who don’t know this yet, please take it from me that its better to go to school and do the work you need to do day by day than to miss school because your sick and end up having to make everything up at once.

ddd

Has this happened to you?

Isn’t it horrible?!

Talk about “Peaceful” demonstrations

Riot police using tear gas on 21 April 2001 ag...

OWS is suppose to be a nonviolent protest against corporate greed. The protestors should be protected by the constitution yet the violence still persist. Police around the country have been brutally beating protestors and tear-gasing them in an effort to disperse crowds.

An incident occurred last week, in Burlington, Vermont, when a 35-year-old veteran committed suicide do to a lack of a job and job security. Another incident occurred when police with tear gas severely injured a marine veteran

The government however turns a blind eye to such treatment, allowing thousands of citizens a day to be arrested and beat for protests. Although politicians may be distracted by the upcoming elections; does that give them an excuse to ignore the people’s rights?(the correct answer is no)

I believe that it is ok for police forces to break up protestors in public areas, what is not okay is to beat and tear gas them, using violent measures against nonviolent protestors.

If the government wants to retain the respect of the people it must allow people to voice their grievances without interference from law enforcement.

Lana Del Rey.

Lana Del Ray

Lana Del Rey is an American singer-songwriter from New York. Born Elizabeth Grant, her music is reminiscent of old cinematic songs mixed with indie pop and blues. It is believed that she adapted the stage name Lana Del Rey from the 40’s to 80’s late actress Lana Turner and the 80’s Ford Del Rey car. The name suits her persona as her style is very old society, old America and Hollywood glamor.

Lana released her first songs Blue Jeans and Videogames in October 2011. Since their release, the New York singer has hit success around the globe. In England she has gained a lot of recognition for her music. Her popularity among the people led to London Show tickets being sold out in 3o minutes on release.

With a rusty, unique voice, simple lyrics, and beautiful backing sounds Lana Del Rey is really someone worth listening to. Her alternative sounds and fabulous old style music videos really show her for a true star.

Salt

Salt.  NaCl.  Sodium chloride.  Table salt.  Sea salt.  A seasoning.  A preservative.  Once so valuable that soldiers were paid in it.  The reason most foods taste good.  Increases the pain of a stinging cut exponentially.  Makes your tongue dry.  A slightly creepy movie starring Angelina Jolie.

I love salt.  I can tell right away when food is too salty, or more often, not salty enough.

When I was little I used to shake some salt into my hand and eat it.  My mother tells me it’s disgusting, and perhaps it is.  But I do it anyway.

I prefer salty to sweet most days.  If I am presented with a bowl of jell-o or a bowl of white cheddar popcorn, 97% of the time I’ll pick the popcorn.

Salt is a necessity to any meal.  Which brings me to the purpose of this blog post.

How many people have seen one of these?

I’m gonna be presumptuous and assume everyone has seen this at least once in their lives.  Yes? Good.

They’re in restaurants, cafeterias, homes and anywhere else there is food.

Now let me ask you this:  How many times have you palmed the salt shaker?

How many times have you put your hand over the metal part and let your skin touch where the salt comes out?

Oh yeah, admit it. A LOT.

Though I am not proud of it, I confess, I have done it a fair amount.  Not on purpose mind you, but it’s a transgression I can never undo.

Am I making this sound dramatic and biblical?  Good.  That’s the point.

Now, this issue never used to bother me.  “Can you please pass the salt?” is often followed by someone palming the shaker and handing it to the asker.

I started seeing it more and more, often at school and restaurants.  Then I thought to myself.  Where have these people’s hands been???

There and endless possibilities of course.  People sneeze into their hands, they touch public things like bathroom doorknobs and pencil sharpeners (if you still use a graphite sharpenable  pencil that is), playing with questionably clean hair, scratching off dead skin, plopped down in unknown gooey matter, typing on filthy keyboards (it is a  proven fact that toilet seats are cleaner than keyboards because they are sanitized more often).

The unpleasantries go on and on.  Mindful of this new information, I became wary of my beloved public salt.  Now I use it sparingly.

Although, these shakers do not concern me:

They also prevents this:

My point: be mindful of the shaker.  Don’t palm the salt!

I’m Back

I finally was able to get back up the hill this morning after a week away from my friends and teachers. It was a crazy week filled with funeral arrangements, the ceremony itself, and of course reconnecting with distant family.

I never knew that my great uncle Bobby ran a pumping tank business.

I never knew that my late grandfather John Olivo Sr. was in the Naval Reserves for 8 years despite the fact that he could not swim. I never knew that Hammonton had as many pizza joints as it does.

I never knew that my father learned his business techniques from subtle life lessons his father taught him.

Yes, it was a very emotional week. But, I had never seen this many Olivos at once. It gave me a newfound respect for what my family does. They make themselves happy. If I am happy, I am able to make the people around me happy. It’s all about consistency and comfort my grandfather always used to say.

Yes, it’s going to take some time to recover from the week. It was crazy driving across that town as many times as I did to go pick up food and flowers for the ceremony.

I helped my aunt, uncle and father write and edit their eulogies and helped write the obituary in the local newspaper. R.I.P. John W. “Pop-Pop” Olivo Sr.

In the Bath is the place to be.

Bubbly,

Atmospheric,

Therapeutic,

Hot.

Relaxing bath

Baths are one of the nicest things on cold days. Fill up the tub with hot water, add some bubble bath or bath salts, and climb in for a long soak. Feel the water lap around you body and fill you with warmth and sooth your limbs.

The bath is really a place I could spend all day.

In the bath is somewhere where you can contemplate decisions and think over new ideas. The hollow tub is truly a place of reflection where your thoughts are free to fill your mind and trickle into your thought processes.

Lying in a bath you are often filled with the sense of peace and tranquility both around you and in your soul.  It is a place to relax, kick back and be free.

In the bath is the place to be.

Nigel Tufnel Day

Although I usually write about politics, today is a very special day, special enough to write about something else.

In Asia, today is singles day (because the date is made up of ones). In the US (as well as many other countries), it is considered an auspicious day.

But for Spinal Tap fans such as myself, 11/11/11 is Nigel Tufnel Day.

This day was chosen based on the famous scene where Nigel explains why his amp goes to 11.

Now if you have not seen Spinal Tap, go see it, now. It is a fantastically funny movie as well as being a cultural staple.

I cannot count how many times I have seen and I am now at the point that I can recite almost every line.

What makes this movie special is that, although it makes fun of Rock & Roll, the musicians/actors in the movie are actually quite talented. They play hilarious songs but they play them well.

If you enjoy humor and good music, watch this movie. It will help you in dinner conversations when people refer to the movie and it will help you in life because every time you see the number 11 you will giggle a little bit.

P.S. I would like to also acknowledge Veteran’s Day. Although there is this very silly post about a very silly movie, it is also a day to say thank you to the people who put their life on the line every day. Thank you to those men an women who put their lives on the line to protect us at home. You get an 11 out of 10.

Trying Something New

Stepping out of my comfort zone is not an easy thing for me to do.
Generally, I don’t like to try new things, especially if I have to commit to them for a long time.

To be honest, I’m afraid of being bad at things that I try.

But this year, I promised myself that I would take new and appealing opportunities that came my way.

So, on a whim, I decided to join the soccer team.

It’s funny when I think about it, it really is. I am sort of clumsy, and I am the slowest runner you will ever meet. I also have no stamina what so ever. I knew I would end up making a fool of myself, but then I decided I didn’t care one bit if I did or not. I mean, how bad could I be?

The answer is, not too bad actually. Although I am very slow and have never played a day in my life before, it turns out I don’t suck as much as I thought I would. I was the manager/helper in past years of soccer, so I already know most of the rules and how the games work.

I know it’s not going to be easy by any means, but I’m so excited for this season. And honestly, I just wish I had joined sooner. Our first game is the week we get back from Thanksgiving break, and I can’t wait!

GO SPUDS! 🙂
