Faith

A new study suggests that Atheists, or somebody who does not believe in the existence of God, know much more about religion than people who are religious. The study says that this happens because atheists usually like to know more about religion, and why they do not believe.

But the greater reason is because once somebody starts to believe in religion, then they stop questioning their faith. This is a very dangerous concept because one cannot blindly follow a religion that they know nothing about.

Beverley Knowles

During the past week, many OVS students received a friend request from Beverley Knowels on Facebook. Some of the students added her as a friend, but some of them have questioned who she is, and they rejected her request.

Beverley Knowels stated that she is an alumni of OVS. However, some students have realized that there is no such a person in OVS history. In the boys dorm, we even had a dorm meeting about this issue. The faculty and student leaders  told students not to add her as a friend.

Some people think that the definition of “friends”  has changed a little bit since Facebook has become popular. People accept people they don’t really know. They accept their friend requests just because they both have mutual friends or they just want to have more friends on Facebook.

It is very dangerous to add someone who we don’t know on Facebook, because other people will know all our information. This is now a very serious problem for everyone who uses Facebook.

Volleyball hosts “Dig for the Cure”

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Week, On October 16th, the Umass Volleyball team will be hosting an event entitled “Dig for the Cure.”

During its game against Southern Connecticut State, players will be selling T-shirts, and pledges, and admission tickets. Each pledge per “dig” during the game, along with all of the proceeds from the sales of their merchandise will be going directly and entirely put toward the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

I believe that this cause is very important and influential, and we should all reach out in this effort. It would be cool if our OVS athletic teams could try to participate in our own spin off of this idea, in correspondence to whatever project we decide to donate to at the time.

Sibling Rivalries?

Many siblings will say that they absolute despise each other. They will fight and physically harm one another, screaming at the top of their lungs: “I WISH I WAS AN ONLY CHILD!”

When I was younger, I “hated” my big brother, Ben, because I thought that was how siblings were supposed to act. I would bite him until he bled, and then burst into tears when my father scolded me for it. I was six at the time. Ben was nine.

We would fight each other, yelling and scratching, but neither of us actually knew why.

When I reached the age of eight, I realized that I didn’t actually hate my brother. In fact, I loved him.

We reached an understanding that we were capable of being friends, but Ben, being the “cool” older brother, would not even say hi to me when we were at school together. I would yell his name and wave my arms frantically when I saw him walking with some of his friends, trying to get his attention, but he would just look straight forward and ignore me.

Once, when I was twelve and he was fifteen, my mom, Ben, and I were standing outside a sushi bar, waiting for our turn to be seated. I was skipping and twirling when suddenly I fell down, scraping my knee and bringing tears to my eyes. I seemed fine at first until I suddenly burst out sobbing (I was always an overdramatic child). My brother, without hesitation, pulled me into his arms and hugged me until I stopped crying.

It was the first time he had hugged in public.

Now, I am proud to say that my brother is not only one of my closest friends, but he is also my hero. I don’t know what I would do without him, and a year ago, I almost found out.

My brother used to race. Not on foot, but in cars. Specifically, he raced a 1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata M Edition in Buttonwillow, CA. He did not race other people, but he raced a clock. Various other people would race against the clock, too, and the person with the fastest time would win.

It was his warm up lap of the third racing event that year when it happened. He was trying to go as fast as possible, to push his limits even while the clock wasn’t running.

It had just rained.

Going around a sharp turn, the car started skidding off the track. His car rolled over not once, not twice, but three times. When his car finally stopped rolling, it was stuck in a ditch that was filled with water. If the car had not landed on its four wheels, and instead landed on the roof of the car, my brother would have drowned.

Ben escaped the nearly-fatal accident with only minor back problems, but needless to say, my mother doesn’t let him race anymore.

I am so thankful that his car landed upright, if it hadn’t, I would have lost the most important person in my life. If that car had landed upside down, I would no longer have my best friend, my hero, my brother.

I remember when I first saw him after the crash. I gave him the biggest hug I had ever given him and gently warned him: “Ben, I love you, but never scare me like that again.”

The Aftermath:

A few months later,
still breathing,

and five minutes after graduating from Santa Monica High School:

Trapped miners in Chile are finally reaching ground level again!

The 33 miners in Chile were stuck underground for over 2 months have finally been rescued. The men were in a gold and copper mine on August 5th when they became trapped.

The rescue effort to bring up the miners from 622 meters underground has been in effect for the past couple days. Each miner is placed in the rescue shaft and pulled up to the surface one at a time. The ride up the shaft takes about 15 minutes.

Families await their loved ones at the surface, in anticipation of hugging them once again after such a long and stressful separation. The rescue is scheduled to be completed by tomorrow.

As a precaution, when the miners get back to ground level, they must go through a series of medical tests to ensure that their health is sound. Millions of people around the world have been following the news and watching the rescue live on television. Both the miners and their loved ones are very lucky to have made it back safe and sound.

Birthdays

Today is my birthday.

Birthdays are something we, as kids, cherish. It’s all about “growing up” and “being a big kid,” but when do we really stop and realize what we have? I’m finding that the older I get, the less excited I am for each birthday. Most kids my age are claiming that they’re excited to be 18, for freedom, and 21, for alcohol, but why? Does anyone stop and think that turning 18 is practically being thrown into a lion’s den from the comfy and less hostile world we’re used to? You have to pay for yourself, manage school work, and keep a social life. It’s already hard enough in high school to manage school work along with a social life. Even adults past age 27 or so wish they were younger. Here, in high school, and partially college, everything is set up for us, but when we hit the real world we’re on our own. I don’t want to grow up anymore.

All You Need

Bright lights blind my eyes and the makeup feels like it is about to melt off of my face. My smile is large and over exaggerated, making my cheeks hurt. I am frozen, my right arm is extended horizontally, my elbow slightly bent with my fingers pointed up to the ceiling and my palm facing the wall. My left arm is lifted, draping over my head with my wrist and hand both limp. My silky hot pink shirt is tailored tight, restricting my breath, but I am still able to open my mouth and belt out my songs.

The band waits for the audience to stop applauding before they start playing; it is my cue to move again. I twirl through rows of people, all dressed in black with red sashes around their waists and paper boy hats on top of their heads. Their characters do not see me, though my character, the fictional Ringa Starr, attempts to get their attention. They suddenly swirl around me, picking me up high above their heads, and spin me in a circle. Their eyes are forward, away from me. They pretend not to see me; they only feel my presence. They set me down, and with a deep breath I open my mouth to sing with as much feeling as I have inside of me:

All you need is love!
All you need is love!
All you need is love, love;
love is all you need!

one award, one list

Once upon a time there was an award for cinematic excellence. This was a truly special award. Just to be nominated was a truly special thing. Those who won have remained in our hearts for years and their legend lives on today. To the winners, we salute you.

“Scha-wingggggg”- Wayne Campbell

What happened to this award?! Seriously! If they allow teen’s choice awards to even exist then I personally don’t see the logic in getting rid of something like this. This list was great. It got our imaginations working and it was guaranteed to start arguments not end them. Not to mention the increase at the box office. Seeing as I’m a man of charity though, I will not let them win. I will keep stimulating minds and creating intellectual thought, as well as helping out the movie business.

Now here’s a list I have personally compiled. The top 10 action movie starletts of the past decade. This particular topic came up because 1: The Roommate is coming out soon, and 2: well I just seem to believe that this genre seems to leave guys walking out of the theater drooling thanks to girls in tight leather uttering catchy one liners and shooting .38s. Plus (3) they all seem to be smoking hot.

here’s my list.

1: Angelina Jolie (Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Lara Croft Tomb Raider)

2: tie between Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels)

3: Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2)

4: Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean)

5: Olga Kurylenko (James Bond Quantum of Solace)

6: Rose Byrne (Troy)

7: Eva Mendes (2Fast 2Furious)

8: Jessica Biel (Blade Trinity)

9: Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil and Ultraviolet)

10: Rose McGowan (Planet Terror)

78 Year Old Shirley-It’s never too late.

You’re always told it’s never too late, yet who believes it. Even now at the age of 16 I numerously find my self saying it’s too late. It’s one of those great excuses we begin to use, as we grow older. An excuse placed in fear of looking foolish or embarrassing ourselves, subsequently a fear of failure.

Countless times the old wise tale has been proven incorrect yet we continue to believe it.  Today that perception changed as I read the inspiring story of an O.A.P.

Before I tell the story I belief I should explain the term O.A.P. An O.A.P or old age pensioner is someone past the age of 65. In Britain this is retiring age. Once you reach this age you reap numerous benefits in order to provide care and support for you in your final years. These include free public transport, discounted prices, and of course the all important pension.

Obama the Muslim!

President Obama announced this Tuesday that he is a Christian “by choice.” It’s kind of sad that Obama still has to prove himself to the American public. Almost two years after the presidential elections, and some people still either a) don’t believe that he is Christian, and/or b) think that he is a Muslim.

Right, because Obama has the middle name “Hussein,” and that his dad was from Kenya means that he is a Muslim extremist who wants to kill America and all of it’s values.
