Senior Aria in Editor Chief…

Aria Ellett.

What words can be said that define how amazing she is.

Is it the smile, maybe.

Is it the hair, maybe.

But no, I think it is just who she is.

An amazing person who you can text at any time and she will always be there.

Mess up with your timing of a blog, Aria’s got your back.

Yea, she might yell at you through her words at first, but then she realized,

Wow, Keaton is almost as great as I am.

I can’t believe she will be leaving us as Senior Editor in Chief Arno Elleteeteetteteeeeetlllleltlellele, theres some correct amount of Es and Ls and Ts, make something out of it, but above all else she will be missed.

Her sassyness in and out of the classroom.

Her laugh snort that I have kept track of all year,

What else can be said but,

You look great.

Kaws

The French Graffiti artist that goes by the name Kaws is an icon in the world of street art and culture. His fame originated in his defacing of bus stop ads.

These small pieces gained notoriety as he started to do standalone pieces.

In the early 2000s he joined with the Medicom Toy Company to create toys, tee shirts, and various other pieces of clothing, and this year is his last with the company.

from small toys paying homage to his early years,

To huge pieces placed in various cities across the country, he has made a statement that will never be forgotten.

Kaws is a symbol of rebellion and youth that will hold true for many years to come.

Circular.

Circular we live

an eternity to see

why waste the Journey

Everywhere we go

people will find their stresses

but lose their true goal.

Life is circular

and people love to worry

slow down. life is long.

War

My name is not important, but it will be. I will stand in front of an army of thousands and watch empires fall. But that is not where this story starts.

We must move past the burning dart, and the ruins of Rome. I am Caesar and Alexander the Great. I led the armies of barbarians against my empire, and I destroyed what I had helped build.

I am locked in a battle with a younger more ambitious spirit. Limitless power emphasizes the qualities of a man, the good and the bad.

I was the first omnipotent being, my only son is the other. Time became our battleground. He grew corrupt with his power, and so did I.

Countless lives were lost.

And now I stand here at the end of the universe staring my enemy in the eye, and I can’t help but feel that this was just a matter of misplaced emotion. We could have stopped this.

Great Structures

A small sapling planted in the ground staring up at the sky and its giant sequoia brethren. Nature develops huge structures through light, carbon dioxide, and water. The forests of the world began as small seeds that became these massive structures.

This is a fitting metaphor for the human experience because everyone around us used to be a microscopic organism in the womb of your mother. We all have a personality and individual experiences, but we all started from the same place.

We built giant cities that rivaled the massive sequoias, built with steel and machinery, but in 200 years which will remain. Will the huge industrial structures of today or the ancient structures that are trees.

Reebok

Reebok what are you doing? I understand that you are trying to push new technologies but this, This is horrific. I don’t even know what to say.

They look like a running shoe had a horrible disfigured child with the Nebuchadnezzar.

This model is called the ATV 19+, a shoe for UFC star Rampage Jackson. This sneaker is meant to be an all terrain trainer, but it looks like you could roll an ankle with the slightest movement.

This is the simply the worst sneaker I have ever seen. You have creator some of the most classic sneakers of the past 20 years and yet this is the best you could come up with?

Reebok you should be ashamed.

This is England

It’s time for another movie suggestion everyone, so hold on to your horses. This week’s suggestion is Shane Meadow’s This is England.

The film documents the life of a twelve year old named Shaun while he struggles to grow up in the 1983 slums of England. Pretty early on in the movie, Shaun falls into line with a gang of much older skinheads who take him in and treat him like one of their own.

Now, keep in mind these are pre-racist skinheads, or original skinheads. Being a skinhead then basically meant juvenile delinquent.  The style was actually brought over from Jamaica by the Rude Boys there and eventually led to music like ska and 2tone. But back to the movie.

Remember how I said Shaun hangs out with non-racist skinheads? Well that all changes in about 30 minutes of the movie when Stephen Graham comes into the scene. Leave it to him.

The rest of the movie is about how little Shaun goes from this…

To this…

Little scamp.

Anyways the movie is an amazing portrayal of Falklands-era England and what was going on back then. Big thumbs up. Its Netflix watch instantly too, go check it out.

Best of Stand-Up

This past weekend, while I was sick, I spent a lot of my time sleeping and watching movies. I also revisited some of my favorite stand-up comics. While I’m here, why not make a list of them?

If there has to be a number one spot, it would obviously go to George Carlin. Carlin is by far the funniest and most political of all stand-up comics. His shows changed the way people thought about comedy, and he certainly brought it to some new extremes.

Some new comedians that I’ve found recently are the panel hosts on 8 out of 10 cats, an English TV show. Jimmy Carr, the host, makes his living off of offending people. What’s so beautiful about it is how well he does it. I kind of think of him as a new and really adult Eddie Canter, because most of his jokes are one liners, and he looks like he belongs in the 20’s. I wish I could put a video up of him, but I’d be hard pressed to find one I could post without offending someone.

Someone whose stand-up I can post, however, is Jon Richardson. Most of Richardson’s comedy revolves around him having low-level OCD. It doesn’t sound funny, but the tiniest things bother him. He manages to make a bit about how he mispronounces “An Onion”, and makes it really funny. Plus, his bit at the end about watching a man eat an apple is gold.

He does swear in this, children, so cover your ears.

Ronnie Fieg

The big news in the sneaker community is often dominated by Nike, Jordan, and Adidas. Occasionally, an Asics, New balance, and recently Puma sneaker appears to become a phenomenon. These are often attributed to small sneaker boutiques and collaborations. The story of the owner of both Kith boutiques, one in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn, is a classic rising from nothing to the top of their field.

Ronnie Fieg has created some of my favorite designs of any sneaker. He has collaborated on countless gel lyte III’s including popular models such as the “Salmon Toe”, “leather back” and the upcoming “selvage denim”
The Famous Salmon Toe

The upcoming Selvage Denim Asics Gel Lyte 3

He started at David Z, a popular shoe and boot store in New York. Here he moved up in the ranks from stock boy all the way up to buyer for the store. It was here that he was able to realize his passion for sneakers. Working at a place like David Z or Kith is a dream of mine, but I am stuck at a boarding school during the school year. He moved on to start Kith, his own sneaker boutique in New York city which has been massively successful and has started his own clothing brand by the same name.

cell

Faced with insurmountable odds life succeeds.

This may be my favorite trait of life.

The resilience and adaptation to our environment has literally made us who we are today.

When I lose myself to the stresses of every day life I think of the odds that I would succeed to this point.

I am an insignificant group of cells in the overall scheme of things

yet the success of my genetic material has been traced back to the first genetic organism.

I share a piece of genetic material and family with every single living organism on the planet.

Although this pertains to every human on the planet not just me.

The whole of life can be looked at as various mutations and blind luck.

I am happy because that means there is always room for opportunity when all seems lost.
