78 Year Old Shirley-It’s never too late.

You’re always told it’s never too late, yet who believes it. Even now at the age of 16 I numerously find my self saying it’s too late. It’s one of those great excuses we begin to use, as we grow older. An excuse placed in fear of looking foolish or embarrassing ourselves, subsequently a fear of failure.

Countless times the old wise tale has been proven incorrect yet we continue to believe it.  Today that perception changed as I read the inspiring story of an O.A.P.

Before I tell the story I belief I should explain the term O.A.P. An O.A.P or old age pensioner is someone past the age of 65. In Britain this is retiring age. Once you reach this age you reap numerous benefits in order to provide care and support for you in your final years. These include free public transport, discounted prices, and of course the all important pension.

Unstoppable

I tried. My sister, Woo Jung Park who is a sixth grader at Pakmun Elementary School in South Korea, started dancing much later than the starting ages of any other dancers. For nearly two years, I unsuccessfully attempted to divert her attention from the Korean Traditional Dance.

I agree with her that dance is a magical experience. It allows one to portray the inner mind beautifully with the heart-throbbing moves. Nonetheless, there are disadvantages. During the summer, I could not resist my frowning at her swollen and nearly deformed feet. I clearly did not want my sister to debilitate both mentally and physically. Then, a single day has revolutionized my mind.

Obama the Muslim!

President Obama announced this Tuesday that he is a Christian “by choice.” It’s kind of sad that Obama still has to prove himself to the American public. Almost two years after the presidential elections, and some people still either a) don’t believe that he is Christian, and/or b) think that he is a Muslim.

Right, because Obama has the middle name “Hussein,” and that his dad was from Kenya means that he is a Muslim extremist who wants to kill America and all of it’s values.

Lost Liverpool

The soccer headlines have been dominated by the news that Liverpool and their owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks are at war. The American owners are in about £237 of debt which in about 376 million dollars. That means that Liverpool cannot buy players and because of that they are suffering.

They are in the relegation zone (or for you non soccer fans, the bottom three teams that get knocked down to the lower division at the end of the year). This has caused a major rift between the fans, coach, players and the owners. The American boys want to sell the club but they have to act quickly because the Royal Bank of Scotland, which holds the debts, will seize the club if the debts are not paid off by October 15th.

Who is Scott Thompson?

Scott Thompson is probably the best known ginger except for maybe Tiny Tim or Shaun White. Scott Thompson is Carrot Top. Personally, I am no big fan of Carrot Top, mostly beause of his straight yet diagnal eyebrows and his bulging muscles that simply seem too large and veiny to be real. (See picture below)

Apparently Scott had an interesting encounter with the Recycled Percussion, a all percussion group heading to China now for “China’s Got Talent.” Scott made the bet that the Doplphins would win against the Patriots in the “Monday Night Mash up.” If Scott were to lose he would have to perform five minutes of live percussion music against the RP’s Justin Spencer who, in return, would do five minutes of stand up comedy. In the end, the Patriots came out victorious. Tough luck Carrot Top.

A sense of ongoing morality/propaganda is evident all over England.

When all falls down we are prepared to work as a team and fight for those morals that make us who we are. What we are. After all we are a team.

Embarrassment for fellow citizens often blemishes this great exterior. Yet we all can say “WE ARE PROUD TO BE BRITTISH”.

Ojai Day is just around the corner

Ojai Day is coming up! It starts on October 16th. Ojai day always takes place on the third Waturday of October. The admission is free along with the parking. There are special areas for kids, teens and adults. The event recognizes that summer is over and it is time to celebrate a new change of season. “The event was originally conceived in 1917, took a hiatus in the 1920’s and has been back with a vengeance since 1991. It’s grown tremendously and has become one of the most popular events in Ojai,” states Jody James the event’s organizer. “The event itself celebrates life, culture and the arts.”
There are all kinds of stands that cover the down town area of Ojai ranging from art to clothing. The food and music are special highlights during this celebration. This day is full of leisure and appreciating spending time with your friends and family, it is also a good place to meet new people.

Well Hello, Sickness

Sick. Oh the joy of being sick (please note the sarcasm).

Yes it’s nice to spend a day inside, reading a book that you’ve postponed because of all of that school. It’s nice to avoid classes for a day or two, taking an extended weekend that only you have the privilege of getting. But is also miserable. A terrible feeling in your stomach, and more headaches then you are used to. Your mom taking you out of school to give you her herbal medicines instead of the regular medicines the nurse will give you. You take a sip of the awful tasting medicine with a wince; it always seems to get stuck in your throat. Your dog, always trying to nibble away at your feet until there is only bone left. Cursing yourself for forgetting your Chemistry Lab Book in your dorm room when you need it for a paper that is long overdue. Procrastinating doing your homework simply because you don’t have a predetermined study time.

Yes, sometimes you crave a sick day, but other times, you just want to avoid it. After being off campus for almost a complete two days, and then finally being brought back, I can’t decide if I’m happy to be just healthy enough, or sad because I’m no longer at home.

Dear My Sick Day,
I guarantee that in two weeks time, I will be remembering you and wishing you were with me once again.

Rain is the Norm

Rain: moisture condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops (according to apple). Rain is definitely common in The British Isles; it’s the norm, something that I now strangely see as positive after a month in Ojai.

Rain is what makes everything luscious and green and allows us to wear the great apparel called rain gear. Granted rain doesn’t come with the positives of giving you a glowing color or allow you to wear shorts, but it is definitely refreshing.

Pessimists could argue that rain is horrible, and I say I can see their perspective — coming in after a trip out completely drenched is not always fun in the best of circumstances. But it definitely makes you appreciate your comfy warm home a lot more.

I now see rain as an extreme positive, but I must say too much can be slightly overwhelming. Everything in moderation.

In fact it’s raining in England right now, so off I go to suit up in my rain gear and enjoy the most of the great weather while I can.

Crackdown

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk dropped Nigel De Jong for two games due to his latest dirty tackle. This weekend while playing for Manchester City in a game against Newcastle United, De Jong went in way to hard on a tackle and broke Hatem Ben Arfa‘s leg. This is the second hard challenge that he has committed recently and gotten away with.  The first was in the final against Spain where he karate kicked Xabi Alonso in the chest and got away with only a yellow card. Nigel de Jong plants his studs into Xabi Alonso's chest

This time he goes in, breaks a player’s leg and doesn’t even get a foul called. But Van Marwijk made up for the refs mistake.
