Super Scary (and Sexist) Halloween Costumes

When I was little, I’d play dress up. I’d put on my mother’s beige heels or my sister’s prom dress and strut around my room like it was a runway.

I’d wear a pink tutu and make a crown out of yellow construction paper and draw little jewels with magenta and green crayons.

I could spend hours and hours just frolicking around my room; trying on this shirt or pretending to be that Disney princess.

Even though my dress up days have passed, there is still one occasion where I can relive one of my favorite elementary school pastimes.

Halloween – It’s the day where the ghosts, ghouls, and zombies come out to play. Where you can be whoever you want to be, without judgement. It’s a time to live in a fantasy for a day.

When I was little I’d jump for joy knowing I could wear my princess or witch costume to school, and the incoming candy overstock I’d have after trick-or-treating.

Now that I’m older, I’m just excited for the excuse to dress up for a day. I’ve noticed that it’s becoming harder and harder to find a costume I like, and for one big reason: women’s Halloween costumes are hypersexualized.

Now, this may not come as a surprise to some of you. You’ve been through the struggle of picking out a costume. Whether it be you couldn’t choose just what you wanted to be or you couldn’t find the perfect costume for who you wanted to be.

For women, finding an appropriate costume takes another ounce of effort. I’ve found that once you grow out of child sizes and into teenage or adult sizes, that the dresses don’t really grow much longer.

If you go onto any major costume store, such as Party City, you can see just how true this is. There are very few costumes for women that don’t contain one of the following: little tutus, corsets, skin-tight body suits, or above mid-thigh skirts.

Now, some women like wearing these costumes, and I see nothing wrong with that. But, the problem is for the women who don’t want to show much skin on Halloween.

Bustle, an online news blog, did an article about the difference between men’s and women’s costumes, which you can see here: http://www.bustle.com/articles/7907-15-mens-and-womens-halloween-costumes-reveal-some-scary-sexism .

They bring an air of comedy to just how sexualized women’s costumes can be. For example, a man’s costume for an owl is a full-body suit while a woman’s costume is a short dress with little feathers all over it.

And that’s not even the worst of them.

The problem with this inherent sexism is that it gives women boundaries for this fun holiday. If a woman isn’t particularly confident in her body, or doesn’t want to show it off, then her costumes are very, very limited.

Even teenage girl’s costumes are becoming more and more skimpy. In fact, most costumes that would fit me I can’t even wear to school, because they don’t follow school dress code.

Some would say that it would be easier just to make a costume at home, but why should I, and many other women, have to?

Instead of telling me what I should do to help my costume-less state, tell manufacturers to create more women’s costumes that are less provocative.

New Ideas For Halloween

Every Halloween there seems to be a myriad of Wednesday Addams, Wes Anderson characters and cats. This year, why not try something different

Instead of being Wednesday Addams try Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice.

Her costume is fairly easy.  You just need a black dress (you can even find this at a thrift store), a floppy black hat and black shoes.  Add some dark makeup and you’re done!

Rather than being a Wes Anderson character like Suzy and Sam from Moonrise Kingdom, try being a camper from Wet Hot American Summer.  These costumes are fun and easy.  All you need are 80’s teenager basics, and these are easily found at American Apparel.  This is a great group costume too.

Then comes the infamous cat, the costume teenage girls tend to gravitate to every year.  Lets try to leave the cat in the past and go with some cute woodland creatures.  Foxes and deer are oh so cute and make awesome costumes.  You can wear a cute and comfy dress and put on some makeup and you’re ready!

School Dances and Ghostly Trances

At OVS, Halloween is celebrated in a unique way. Although boarders don’t necessarily go trick or treating, through the Halloween dance and spirit days, festive spirit is present.

Day students are able to go home and celebrate Halloween in a more standard way, whereas boarding students get to spend their time at school. At the dance, people dress up and show off their costumes. On the day of Halloween, costumes can be worn to school.

On the other hand, boarders spend Halloween night in the dorms. That can be fun, spending the night binging on scary movies and eating a ton of candy. However, there’s something special about being outside on Halloween night, with spine-tingling stories being told and that spooky feeling in the air.

It’s not really explainable, but all those stories about witches and goblins, haunted houses and the curses that come along with them – it all seems so real on October 31st. Maybe it’s just me, but on that one night, the air seems like it’s buzzing with ghostly presences, just waiting to be discovered.

An Abundance of Autumn

However it is celebrated, autumn is a season to rejoice – the weather becomes colder and Halloween is just around the corner.

Although some don’t love the cold, to most it means oversized sweaters, and relaxing in the fresh air. California’s hot weather is nice for a while, but by the time fall rolls around, many are grateful for the change.

The smell of leaves changing is an important aspect of autumn – it embodies the season perfectly. Here, there aren’t enough trees to jump into leaf piles, but it’s nice nonetheless.

By the time fall comes along, Halloween is in the near future, and is already highly anticipated. Whether that means preparing a costume, or just enjoying all the spirit, Halloween is an exciting Holiday.

Not only is autumn important on its own, but it is the gateway into the winter holidays, which leads to an abundance of spirit. As a whole, fall is a wonderful season, filled with many great features.

Mickey’s Halloween Time

I had the most amazing weekend.

I went to Disneyland with my roommate and one of my best friends, Brooke Browning.

We stayed at a Hilton, and as I walked in the door, I looked down to see a text from her:

I’m gonna get you.

Turning my head, I dropped all my bags and ran into her arms when I saw her running full speed at me.

What most people don’t understand is the intensity with which CIMIans miss each other during the year.  I hadn’t seen her in 63 days, which for us, is like 63 lifetimes.

At camp, the C’s (16-17 year olds) have a  Murder Mystery Party and this year it was cowboy themed.  I wore my costume from that crew night and Brooke went as Max from Where the Wild Things Are.

She made her costume, mind you.  She makes everyone’s costumes at camp.

Disneyland at Halloween time is so awesome.  They go all out with the decorations, the shows, the commodities.

Scary Scary Time!

halloween

Halloween is coming up and man am I ready to scare some people! Halloween to me is the most fun day because you get a chance to dress up as something you’re not and go get candy from all the houses around your block. That is unless you go to a boarding school haha.

candy

BUT being at a boarding school is not that bad. On Halloween I will make sure to have a lot of fun scaring people out of their minds. Plus we have a nice Halloween dance, and a best costume contest, which I never win.

This year will be fun though, we have a lot of people who share my passion with scaring people and that is what makes Halloween fun. Scaring people.

Get ready OVS cause I’m going to scare you all!

What do you think about Halloween?

Halloween

In order to welcome Halloween, the OVS student council decided to hold a Halloween haunting tour. We spent few hundred dollars buying costumes and props. However, we didn’t charge the students ay money to take the tour.

The tour began at the courtyard at Friday night, where a mad pianist was playing horrifying music while several zombies were eating dead bodies waiting for new victims to come. After facing the terrifying zombies, a werewolf and the guy from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre were waiting to scare on their way down to the amphitheater.

At the amphitheater, two crazy scientists had just lost control of a ferocious Frankenstein. After escaping from Frankenstein, the survivors stepped into the pool area, which was Death’s territory. The Death and a haunting ghost are trying to take the survivors lives away.

The whole scary adventure was a welcome surprise for the entire school and provide a scary for Halloween.
