Watching my day go

A day of rest is almost gone.
We left a few hours after dawn.

To the city near the coast.
It’s the environment I hate the most.

We walk aboard the shaky vessel.
On the sea I’m and insignificant pebble.

The minutes pass, nothing is seen.
I wonder where the whales will be.

They come up and shake their tails.
The whale watching is quite a fail.

Straight up and down its not very fun.
I could not wait until the trip was done.

Arrested Development

There are few shows that have been as amazing as Arrested Development.

Of course, shows like The Simpsons have been better all around, but there hasn’t been a show, in my opinion, as smart as Arrested Development.

The show is entirely based around the Bluths, a upper class family that is having a financial meltdown. The one member of the family that tries to keep them all together is played by Jason Schwartzman.

The show has an amazing cast (another one of the best parts of the show).

The only bad part about it is that it only had three seasons. That was not nearly enough. There had been rumors forever about a movie being made of the show, but that never happened.

Now, the show is being revived for a fourth season. It will be aired exclusively on Netflix.

Let’s just say I know what I’ll be doing during finals week.

A Week to Remember

Well, this week has been just incredible. I have faced a TON of success this week.

The big day was Thursday, where I not only received a strong SAT score but also won 1st place in the sports writing category of the Tri-County Journalism Competition that me and my class went to.

Last year, the first place winner was also named John and due to a dramatic pause last year, my heart sank in anticipation of hearing my last name called. However, last year was not my destiny.

Instead, the powers that be made me wait until this year, where I finally corrected my wrongs, and earned the top prize.

I’ll be honest. I was a little bitter this year after one of my classmates (who happens to be one of my closest friends) won a Ventura County Star award for her sports journalism and I received nothing. However, I should be thanking her. I gained a new sense of determination going into the competition this past week after not getting the Star award. By the way, I’m really not that bitter being as she really put out an incredible article to win her award. I was very proud of her. Way to go Daphne!!!!

Anyway, the SAT score isn’t as big of a deal to me despite its affect on my college resume. The journalism accomplishment makes me feel that sense of superiority. I came into the competition expecting that I would win something. I was hopeful for first place. But I knew that after last year, this was my time.

Way to go, OVS journalism! We really made things happen!

Duane Allman

There are those who spend their whole lives trying to be great.

There are those who die young and are remembered for their contributions to this planet.

Then there’s Duane Allman.

By all accounts, Duane Allman’s measly 24 years on this planet should not have built up to much. But he managed to become one of the most influential guitar players in history…a couple of years out of high school.

Duane Allman has, obviously, played for the Allman Brother Band. He also backed greats such as Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton (who was quoted as calling Allman his soulmate in terms of guitar playing), Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Derek and the Dominoes.

He became the sound of American Soul before anyone knew who he was. Sadly, he died in a motorcycle crash before he became the next Jimi Hendrix.

Duane Allman isn’t the best guitarist of all time, or my favorite. But if I could sound like any guitar player ever, it would definitely be him. He has more soul than some sort of soul machine. Just listen to this song he played with Clapton.

The Ball goes round

The building looms in on the yellow dragon.

Children hop on the suburban band wagon.

Three holes in, one throw out.

Does anyone know what this game is about.

Some say yes, most say know.

Some asked “who cares though?”

Rolling down the slippery hall.

Make sure it doesn’t hit the wall.

Gutter clears all sewage away.

Unfortunealy I’m here to stay.

Hours passed, my fun is done.

If it was up to me I would rather run.

Into the hills far away.

I’ll decide the game I’ll play.

Mr. Noodles.

People do love food. After I came to OVS, i discovered that students do love noodles, I mean instant noodles, which can be cooked in short period of time, usually with good flavors.

Instant noodles are for “lazy” people mostly but to be honest, I personally regard them invention as a smart stuff and they indeed change our lives a lot. Then I did some research on the instant noodles and discovered more about them.

Instant noodle was invented by a Janpanese. In 1958, Momofuku Ando invented “CHICKEN RAMEN ™”, the world’s first instant noodle product. His achievement brought a revolution in culinary culture. In 1971, he developed “CUP NOODLE ®”, the world’s first cup-type noodle product. In the editorial in its January 9, 2007 edition, the New York Times expressed appreciation for the achievements of “Mr. Noodles,” who it said deserved an eternal place in the pantheon of human achievement.

“The technology of “CHICKEN RAMEN ™” developed by Momofuku in a humble shed behind his home involved rapidly drying noodles through flash-frying in oil.” This method became the basis for all instant noodle production.

Later, his revolutionary “CUP NOODLE ®” concept in which a single container serves as packaging, cooking vessel and serving dish was the basis for cup-type instant noodles.

Nowadays, the instant noodles have numerous types from different countries. Even though hey are not really healthy, they can be fairly helpful and save your life when you are lazy to cook and when you want to try something different.

Colleges start with ME.

As my junior year is coming to an end, my English class recently began to focus on the college stuff.

Ms. Boismenue came to my English class yesterday to introduce all of us a scary thing called “college essay.” Although I’ve heard how important it is for the application process of colleges, I could still feel the power of it which made me feel nervous and of course, stressful.

However, as Ms.Boismenue and our English teacher Ms.Wilson explained to us more details about the process, I felt it was the most important process but also the most interesting part of the colleges applications.

Ms.Boismenue then handed to us a list of some traditional and creative essay topics from some colleges the past few years, and asked us to actually pick one of them and plan to write. There were about ten topics and this one caught me eyes – “It has been said in the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. Describe your fifteen minutes. ” (from NYU, 2007)

We were told that for all the college essays, they want to know a real “YOU” from your writing which shows them how their school fits you the most and why you are different from other numerous applicants.

Senior Aria in Editor Chief…

Aria Ellett.

What words can be said that define how amazing she is.

Is it the smile, maybe.

Is it the hair, maybe.

But no, I think it is just who she is.

An amazing person who you can text at any time and she will always be there.

Mess up with your timing of a blog, Aria’s got your back.

Yea, she might yell at you through her words at first, but then she realized,

Wow, Keaton is almost as great as I am.

I can’t believe she will be leaving us as Senior Editor in Chief Arno Elleteeteetteteeeeetlllleltlellele, theres some correct amount of Es and Ls and Ts, make something out of it, but above all else she will be missed.

Her sassyness in and out of the classroom.

Her laugh snort that I have kept track of all year,

What else can be said but,

You look great.

Isolation

Isolation is a theme that I address in a lot of my short stories and poems. I think the way a person deals with the feeling that they are separated from the rest of society creates a unique look into a person’s mind. It creates a more real perspective.

Isolation is an interesting concept in the age where we have people living for months at a time in space. Six people can live thousands of miles away from their home on the planet, but survive for months.

Space and the deep sea create interesting locations for stories, and the exploration poses serious questions about the sanity of the human mind.

Kanye West’s New Music

Kanye west performed on saturday night live this week, and the only way I can describe it is… Interesting. He has changed his sound to a darker more industrial style which channels the Death Grips, and It works within that style.

My only problem is that I feel like the music is much too serious. He looks like he’s having no fun. I miss the soul-sampling Kanye from his early years. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was a Masterpiece and a fantastic summation of Kanye’s style, this new album seems as though he is changing his style too much and too fast. His songs “New Slaves” and “Black Skinhead” both have titles that will stir up controversy, and I think he wants them too.

His debut of the “New Slaves” video, which he projected on 66 walls across the world was incredibly cool, and is a testament to his marketing creativity.
